Yeah, i have similar issues with my kids as well. I use my sons desktop from time to time, and he (and my daughter) use my mac all of the time. The kids never close out their apps when done. From time to time on the mac, things seem sluggish for me. I check their accounts, and sure enough, games are running, and browser video sessions exist.

So, i get where you are coming from.

I haven't read this whole thread, but has anyone tried closing all apps before shutdown?
They do not reopen but I have seen reports of the touchscreen keyboard opening when not opended before shutdown.

Actually, while testing/reporting on this issue I've come more and more to rely on apps reopening on a restart. Regedit and IE are both apps that reopen. IE even reopens with my partially complete post still there if I was using the 'Go Advanced' editor.

I can see how this could be seen as a useful feature, but it's 'unfinished work' - there's no documentation, no way to turn it off and only a select few apps can use it.
It is up to the program designers to decide if their program should automatically open on restart if permitted by OS. This is why some do and some don't.

We have an inconsistent mess now.

Besides, we always had HIBERNATION to do this.

This is one of the poorest implementations MS have ever done not being thought through, especially from a security or confidential (or just plain embarrassment) view point. Worse still, it is not even consistent for same apps.

Imagine a Spotify session opening playing an S Club 7 or Cliff Richard record in front of your pals .

    Exactly!
This "Feature" uses exactly hibernation, so if disabled it will not function.

Maybe, but I don't have hibernation enabled, and I restarted with Word open.....it came back.

Yeah, what a mess, just tested further and the ONLY application re-launching for me was Outlook 2016, minimized.
Had left Edge, Mail open before restart.

The feature is New and merely tags the programs running ( those that have the capability to be restarted ), and attempts to restart at next boot It also works on a restart command which Hibernate does not

I actually have all my systems set up to Hibernate on use of the ON/OFF button and Hybrid Sleep with the sleep button so to actually shut down I have to specifically select to do this. The downside of the hibernate system is the delay in shutting down and the use of (in My case on this system ) 32GB of Disk Space, ( which is cheap these days so not a real issue ).

I actually only shut down a system for maintenance purposes, Hardware changes and updates, ( that reminds me I have to fit the 3rd Party Processor cooler I've had here for six months )

Thanks to Dalchina, I've become aware of this thread. I'm also having IE launch automatically at boot, plus my Galaxy download client will relaunch if it isn't exited via the system tray on previous shutdown.

No @Win7ine, it doesn't. What it uses is a function that's been in Windows since Vista and previously only available to users via the command prompt: shutdown /g or shutdown /sg

The Start menu's power button now uses these types or shutdowns instead of the /s or /r that it used before.
