No, that particular setting is still available in 'Sign-in options', it's the others like Pin and Picture password that are greyed out. I use no password and I can toggle the switch for 'use your sign-in info to automatically finish setting your device after an update or restart' (Windows 10 Home, 16299.125).

Oops. I shouldn't believe everything I read. I saw "You must add a password before you can use the other sign-in options" and didn't bother to scroll to the bottom of the settings to see this was not true. Sorry.

How come posts stopped 3 weeks ago? Did someone post a solution to this problem among the 243 posts between October 18th and Jan 5th?

It was never a major issue and Microsoft has fixed it, (or more accurately given the option to control), in the Insider Preview Builds so it should disappear in the next major update [1803]

I'm not 100% sure, but I think this was just added to FCU with the cumulative update KB4058258 (build 16299.214):
on a restart Fall Creators Update reopens apps from before-tebn.jpg
I have to do more tests ...

Edit: Confirmed, in my PC with FCU (16299.214) the apps or programs open before rebooting (Chrome, word, excel etc) doesn't autostart if this toggle is disabled:
on a restart Fall Creators Update reopens apps from before-mki.jpg
This only happens after installing this cumulative update, in the build 16299.192 that toggle had no effect in this so called "feature".

Thanks for that - it was bugging me mildly.

It is not an obvious thing to toggle - it used to do something completely different (i.e. log you in after upgrade so you skip the "Getting things ready" dialogue). As it says in the description in fact.

Strange they didn't make a new option - or at least change the description.

The tutorial here is pretty clear but it is odd (to me anyway) that one option does two different things - auto log on after upgrade and reopen apps on restart.

Still - better the option is somewhere odd that nowhere :)

Thanks for spotting that. My tests with x64 Home, build 16299.214 confirm your results.

I suspect, after an unexpectedly hostile reaction to this unannounced new feature (what do you mean 'you don't like it?' We designed it for you!) it was a case of looking for an existing setting that could be co-opted into an on/off switch without looking too much like a 'kludge'.

    Ha ha! Quite so.

I liked the old functionality and so had it on. So did you I bet. Now I have it off. I'll now turn it on every 6 months for the feature upgrades and then turn it off again - if I remember obviously.

I sound like I'm moaning but I'm really not as it is a small thing - I'm happy to we can now turn off reopening apps even if we turn off something else also. They almost listen to feedback
