Not this thread, Nigel. The MS Community thread. (Edited my post above) Tried email subscriptions back in 8F. That drove me crazy crazier. I just bookmark and use my subscription page here using full posts per page.

This is a program affected by this "feature". Time to dig deeper!

Disabling system write permissions to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce" kills the new restart feature released with 1709! If you don't know the risk involved in doing so please don't.

And how do we learn the risks involved ... other than by trying it?

The runonce key is used to run programs on the next system start. Anytime you've had a program/program installer launch on boot there's a good chance this key was involved. This hack would never result in an inoperable system or even instability. The only real issue is by removing system access there's a good chance you may not be able to enable the key again. You could do an offline backup of the user registry hive and restore it later. There is a easy and safe way to experiment with this if you would like. Create a new account on the computer and try it under that account. HKEY_CURRENT_USER only affects the logged in user. Any new or existing accounts will not be affected.

i finally installed fall creators, and i noticed this reboot reopen feature.

I actually like it, because I have a lot of windows to open, and they're always the same programs.

But I agree there should be an option to turn it off.

Strictly speaking, for the public release shouldn't that be "There will be" when 1803 arrives? 1709 is build 16299, only Insiders can turn it off at present.

Starting with Windows 10 build 17040:

Based on your feedback, the feature to restore applications that have registered for application restart after you reboot or shutdown (through power options available on the Start Menu and various other locations) has been set to only occur for users that have enabled Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting my device after an update or restart in the Privacy section under Sign-in Options Settings.

The signon options are only available for accounts with passwords. The account on an unshared desktop computer in a secure location may not be defined that way. (Yes, many people shudder at that idea but in the real world such things happen.)
