Windows 10 only allows 260 characters - crash

    Hi there,

I have a few folders with a lot of subfolders which brings me to the limit of characters of the file path.

    My System is:

    Windows 10 Pro
    Version 1703
    System Build 15063.674

In order to be able to have more subfolders, I have already tried to remove the 260 character limit by running gpedit.msc and enabling "NTFS long paths" (Local Computer Policy>Computer>Configuration>Administrative Templates>System>Filesystem).

However, when I put a long file into a folder which would then exceed the 260 limit, explorer crashes.

Has someone an idea how I can once and for all remove the 260 charater limit?

This has been discussed a number of times here.
The limit still applies, unfortunately, despite hopes of its removal.

Please feel free to search for more if you wish e.g.

Thanks, I tried to search but it seems the search function did not work or I failed to use it properly .. I just saw other thread, too, thank you.

I've found that site searches generally don't return useful results (most websites).

Strangely enough, the exact same search typed into Google (using the site filter) will almost always return useful results.
