While I understand the need for Green and we should save as much energy as possible I wonder how much energy is actually saved turning off a NIC ??

Glad to here you're happy and your system is happy.

Now the Fall Creators Update is waiting somewhere in the ether.

Well it's been working better, but right now there was a problem with an overtly weak signal from the (data) cell Tx and I strongly suspect the poor Mobile Partner dongle got dingled trying to deal with that .... and the first freeze in days. But that's better than several EVERY day.

Will be more watchful the next time I see this weak signal issue and won't leave the EliteBook alone so long then ....

Relating to the above two freezes: at the same time that the cellular (data) Tx/sender was extremely weak, putting extra load on the Mobile Partner dongle and associated software (see screenshot below), WinX decided it needed Updates. I have 10 Pro and have set the Updates to inform me but not Update w/o permission. So I did as usual to save time on my CAPLESS (unlimited) metered Internet connection, I went to Win/MS Catalog Update and used self-standing downloader. Then WinX decided that that the two Updates were incompatible with my machine.

Fine. Then I let Defender (which is on Periodic Scan along with fulltime Kaspersky/KIS) download the latest definition which Windows Update insisted it needed. I tried twice and Defender informed that it could not locate the file (online presumably). OK three failures. But when I checked the Reliability History (below) apparently WinX had in fact successfully downloaded and installed all three.

So I fall back on internal bugs and self-conflicts in v1703, in the last case exacerbated by Update AND Defender trying to work against Mobile Partner having a bad hair-day, I mean weak input signal at the moment!

I truly wish the software engineers at MS/Redmond could be made specifically aware of these issues

I consider MS, Google (Chrome), FB & the like to be extremely personally invasive, and so refuse to get a MS account. It is possible to contact MS support but only if I give them my eMail or phone number. Sufficiently "old-fashioned", I value what privacy I can maintain without being tracked and all my purchases and friends publicly available. And my "problem" with freezing is not unique in any/every case.

In other words, through my computer & devices these above entities wish to control me. I value self-control instead

If you are online, this battle is more or less lost. OK, no need to feed them with more info than what is necessary :)

    was my idea

AND, the Beat Goes On (OK, I was testing by leaving it unattended, it was working for a few sec, but maybe was over-confident and pushed it too hard/fast at first after its non-sleep "rest")

plus apparently Defender missed a new definition Update and IT "pushed too hard"

Since the above freezes (and many but not close to all) involved Update failures, and since I am not interested in "other MS products" (except Skype which I update separately when I agree), I have now unchecked that (previously checked) box >

I know this is a big job but updates just shouldn't be failing like this.

The fact they are would have me either looking into an inplace repair / upgrade or a clean install.

We have tutorials for both. Currently if you download the media creation it will download Fall Creators Update, V1709.

Everyone hates clean installs but it does provide an excellent base.

Before trying diagnostic procedures or OS installs I always recommend that you create a backup of your data off machine, create an Image with a tool like Macrium Reflect and have bootable media that matches your current Windows environment.

First of all, any updates I need I have ZERO problem finding and downloading, using the self-standing downloader for all advised by Windows Update and through Windows Defender itself (I check Defender and update it daily). Kaspersky updates itself sometimes a few times/day with no problems. So it is ONLY these Window Store apps, etc. which I cannot delete that must be a problem, and/or continuing conflicts with KIS trying to prevent app updates which I refuse since I refuse to use those apps (but cannot delete). A few months ago I totally BLOCKED all Window Update (possible with Pro) and it still froze, so I restored Update after.

Still the situation is a lot cleaner and if it stays that way I can accept an occasional easily-restored freeze

Next question: how good is it and are there any new problems with v1709? That is, should I install it or wait ....?
