Well yes. You have to open it. Otherwise you could just use a photo of the box from the internet.

You can't check an imaginary key. If I was selling a key I certainly wouldn't tell you the key so you could "check it".

Are you suggesting they ask for the key to "check" it. And then give it back and promise not to use it or tell any one? How about you post all your MSDN keys so we all can "check" them?

    Hmmm.

OEM (or system builder) license isn't transferable. According to the EULA (which may or may not be enforceable depending where you live) you can only use it for a new build PC you intend to sell to someone else. No-one cares about that.

If you want a transferable license you need to get a full retail - which are slightly (about €40) more expensive.

If I was the OP I'd just get a cheap Windows 7 license and use that.
I suggest seller could check, blank out keys except last five digits and send report to buyer. If seller is legit, he would do that. Then buyer buys licence, and if last five digits do not match, OP can complain accordingly. Chance of seller having a different key with same last five digits is 36*36*36*36*36 = 60,466,176 to 1.

If the retailer can't answer your question, then I (that's just me) probably wouldn't purchase it.

But, if you are looking for Windows 10 Home, and are already running 7 or 8. I believe you can still get Windows 10 free from Microsoft.

Ok, I've decided to ditch this seller because of the questions I asked and more importantly the answers I got, read below. Apologies for the English I've just chucked them through a translator.

    Me to him:
´I just found your website and the Ebay listing while searching for Windows 10 Home English version (KW9-00017 Eng Int).
Please do not take offence but you can confirm that this is an original product (x19-92030-03) sealed with a retail license key (not OEM) and USB.
The reason I ask is because the price is so incredibly low.´

    His responce:
´No, I'm not offended, the question is absolutely lawful and intelligent.
In my opinion this is an OEM license, then redone because I do not explain otherwise how my supplier can give me a price that will allow me to sell it at the price we sell it.
On the Microsoft site costs about 150 euros, there is a justification there must be me is OEM if you want a perfect retail version not to buy.´

I then sent him a follow up email to ask if he could send me a photo of the actual item in question and to confirm that it has KW9-00017 somewhere on the box - I've received no reply.

So, obviously something fishy going on here; either out and out lie about what the item actually is or some dodgy open retail pack with some sort of OEM nonsence stuck in it. At the same time him trying to feign ignorance when we damn well know, that he knows, what he has.

In any case I'm buying from elsewhere.

    Cheers,
    Tom.
