How do I make my cursor stop jumping around as I am typing?

I am frequently annoyed by my cursor jumping around as I type, particularly as I'm writing emails or indeed any place where there's a large text area - like the one I'm posting this question in - and I'm finally annoyed enough about it that I am trying to figure out how I can stop it from happening.

It's particularly annoying when I am typing a long sentence, pause for a second to think of exactly what I want to say next, and find the cursor has gone backwards, selecting part of my paragraph, and then erased it. Sometimes, it just erases everything I've written in the entire email! That was particularly exasperating before I realized that CTRL-Z was enough to bring it back. Luckily, I figured THAT out quite quickly.

Sometimes, the cursor just jumps away without deleting anything and then I have to go hunting for it, forcing me to spend up to several seconds tracking it down, erasing whatever got typed at the wrong spot, and then repositioning the cursor where it should be. Naturally, this doesn't help my productivity!

I should point out that this occurs on both of my laptops, one of which is an older Dell and the other of which is a slightly newer ASUS, both of which are running Windows 10 Version 21H2. This issue typically happens multiple times within a single email. It has already happened a few times in writing this question.

I'm not the world's most physically co-ordinated person by any means but I don't have any disabilities with my hands or brain either, like tremors or epilepsy.

This is an old problem that I've had since I got my current laptop, which is several years old, and maybe further. I don't remember precisely at this point.

I'm wondering if this is a problem with the sensitivity of the touchpad? Is there a setting that I can change that would keep this from happening or at least minimize it? Or is there some other cause to this problem?

This is probably caused by you brushing against or accidentally touching your touchpad.
Look in the touchpad settings for one called 'palm check' which is mean to reduce that possibility.

    Consider
    - reducing the sensitivity of your touchpad
    - disabling it when using a mouse... there are various ways to do that, and the method available to you depends on your laptop and driver.
    - possibly a FN button is available
    - even a dedicated switch
    - an option in Settings
    - install a MS precision mouse driver to obtain that option in Settings
    - a 3rd party tool if all else fails.
    - disable touchpad when mouse plugged in

This is discussed in and in comments following the relevant tutorial and related threads on this topic.

From the huge searchable Tutorial section (do try searching that.. have a look..very worthwhile) I found for you:
Adjust Touchpad Sensitivity in Windows 10
Enable or Disable Touchpad in Windows 10

Based on the many references to "mouse" in the answer, I'm guessing that was a boilerplate reply to questions of this kind. I didn't mention using a mouse and haven't used one in years But that's fine, the first link in your answer, on adjusting sensitivity, helped me discover that I had my touchpad set on high-sensitivity so I dialed it back to medium-sensitivity and did a quick test. Everything seems MUCH better now!

It's weird. I tried looking for sensitivity settings for the touchpad a while back via Control Panel but didn't see anything that looked promising at the time so just endured the annoyance. I don't know if they added a sensitivity control after I looked at those settings or if I just missed it somehow the time I looked. Whatever the case, I'm kicking myself that I didn't ask about this long ago. It would have saved me some real aggravation.

And were you REALLY expecting me to assume from the fact that you HADN'T mentioned a mouse that I was supposed to guess with 100% accuracy that you weren't?

    Really, that's an insulting response.

Thank you for talking the time and trouble to reply. You're added to my ignore list. Unsubcribed.
