Windows 10 Search not working (Bing appears in background)

I use the windows 10 search from the task bar but now as soon as i start to type a search query it appears to lock up and just shows a bing image in the background. Hitting enter to complete the search entry also has no affect. Has anyone else come accross this and is there a simple fix for it.

    (See Screen shot below)

    Thanks.

Try running the search troubleshooter. Normally I'd say find 'troubleshoot' in the search box, but in your case, look for it in...
Settings > Update & security > Troubleshoot > Search and indexing.

You can run troubleshooter in Setings / Windows updates / Troubleshoot and select search

Bree beats me by a second.. better two answers than none :)

    If that doesn't help:
Reinstall and Re-register Apps in Windows 10 Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
Search for Cortana- and follow instructions at the top of the section to register it.

Otherwise- do you have any relevant system restore points?

And then- does the same happen if you create a new user account for test purposes?

Obscurely MS links Cortana with the Start menu troubleshooter:
