Ok, so actually the second time then the search works. Sometimes when I tap the WinKey it won't take the first letter I type. Too quick on the draw. If I wait just a second, then it does. Try waiting just a second or two.
nope, if I wait nothing happens. there is nothing focused and typing does nothing. it's the subsequent 2 WinKey presses that focuses to the Search Box by hiding the Start Menu and bringing it back.

I'm going to try resetting Cortana preferences. I'm guessing it's something tied to it.

My experience is that 10 has somewhat of a "focus" problem. Is this a constant thing or just once in a while?

Ok. That's a possibility. Cortana and Bing are very integrated into the OS.

One more question > Did this seem to start after installing something? Or perhaps after Update Tuesday 2 weeks ago?

yeah, I've tried that, doesn't change things. this still works the way it use to on some of my other PC's so I'm not sure what I did. This is on an HP x360 Spectre, maybe there is some other Toolbar extension (i.e. like BatteryBar) that has messed things up.

I'll start using the Windows Key/S combo from now on that HippsieGypsie suggested as it does what I want. :)
Happened to me, think in the beginning of the week. And playing with it for a while, just started working again. I'm not on that computer, so can't check right now..

If HippsieGypsie's suggestion works for you, that's great , but don't give up. Maybe check, what changed on the date this begun. Quickest way is in Reliability history (Win+S and type reliability)

Yes, we're seeing a lot of that lately unfortunately. Try running System File Checker at least three times even if it says it found no violations. Worth a try.

And like Andre says > Sometimes the system works things out.

One more thing to try out, eelpout. Try running the Search troubleshooter. Settings / Windows update and security / Troubleshoot

heh, another problem i've noticed which is likely related. many things that are intended to open the Settings panel and then go to the sub panel within don't work either. the Settings app will open and then just sit there with a gear logo. For example, if I search for Troubleshoot in the "Type here to Search" box, select Troubleshoot (system settings) from the results, it opens Settings and just sits there with the gear and never proceeds. If I open Settings directly I can still navigate and search within the app itself. It failed the same way when I tried to go directly to brightness level by right clicking in the battery level pop-up.

It sounds like an overall Search indexing problem. And FYI running the Troubleshooter for Search/Indexing found nothing wrong. May have to try the SFC check next. Or wait for the Fall Creators Update.
