Your first screenshot shows the Start Menu > Programs folder for your app contains four shortcuts to executables with string QGIS at the beginning of the file name.

The second screenshot shows that you have searched for QGI (letters in bold) and that search has found all four, suggesting the best match and showing the other three under it.

I can't understand what the problem is? It's like if you are saying that search is not working because it finds everything you search for?

    Thanks for your time Kari,

the problem is that search seems to find the legacy shortcut for the program,

the actual shortcut is: "QGIS Desktop 2.18.12"

the search result is "QGIS Desktop 2.18.11"there is not such shortcut in the start menu folder (1st screenshot)

i have already rebuild the search index several times but that did not solved the problem.

the above screenshot contains the full search string with no result.

OK. I didn't notice the difference in version numbering.

Is the .11 still installed? What happens when you try to launch the one found by search?

    There is no more .11 it's updated to .12;

nothing happens when you launch 2.18.11 because the shortcut does not exists anymore
is there another indexing system that conflict with the old win7/8.1 style one (?)

Could you please try to open the file location of that .11 version to see if remnants of that old version are still on system. Just right click it in search and select Open file location.

What about Start? Checking the app in list of all apps in Start, is the old or new version shown?

I cannot right click because the search proposed shortcut does not exists

all start menu items are ok and they work as expected (the program start):

in the end the problem is that search does not index the new shortcuts in the start menu folder

I've now tested this with several Win32 apps, installing an older version, checking it can be found with search, replaced it with a later version. Everything works as it should.

Can't understand why your system does not index the current version.
