A square between hours and minutes, anyone seen this and how to remove it?

Mine shows a colon. It looks like your comp. has chosen another typo character. (That's not much help though!)

You have a problem with the font used for the ':' that should be there, like in this thread...

After much faffing about, I've finally sorted it. The bottom line was that the default Segoe UI font package wasn't installed
Win 10 Pro Creators update taskbar clock anomaly - any suggestions?

You haven't been tweaking your system, have you? From earlier in that thread...
I had exactly the same problem after messing with the system fonts via Winaero Tweaker.

Anyway, I simply did a reinstall of Creators Update and that fixed it. No Clean Install just a simple Update or Upgrade and keep original programs, etc. and that fixed it.

If you can't fix the font and want to try the repair install, there's a tutorial.

If you are not on the Creators Update (version 1703) yet then you'll need the install media for the version you have (1607?). If you don't have the install media, let us know what version you are on and we can tell you how to get the right media.

Did you by any chance use Winaero Tweaker to change the default System Font? That will definitely produce exactly what you have.

    Hi Guys,
Yes, changed system font with Winaero.
I will wait for the next major Windows update, rather than do as you guys suggest. Hopefully that will resolve then.
It is no big deal as I hide the taskbar anyway.
    Thanks for you help.

    Update
Reinstalled (extracted from Win10 media, and copied) the Windows fonts, all is now OK.
    Thanks again.

    @lafargeotte

Glad you got it fixed. For future reference, you could have gone back into Winaero and clicked on reset this page where the System Font change was. It would have gone right back.

Using a custom system font, I replace the colon with a hyphen.

    Yes I did.

I changed "system font" in Winaero and ended up with a box instead of a colon on my desktop clock.

What should I do now (I know I can get the colon back if I returned to the previous font but I don't want that.

I want to keep my new font and still not see a square on the desktop clock. What should I do?

It's not Winaero itself doing that. It's a known fact for a long time (years?) that if you change the general System Font, it can mess up some display items. The clock with the squares is the classic example. That's the first thing people notice after they have changed it. Some say to remap that character to a colon or dash or other character, or try other tricks to get around it. Truth is, it's hard to get the System Font changed without messing things up. Probably, you are trying to get it darker and/or bolder so you can see better. You can mess with the True Font settings (tricky), or just keep experimenting until you get something as close to what you'd like without making the System Font angry.

An excerpt from the tutorial here:

Be very careful which font you chose to use as a system font!

Many font types do not support all characters needed for the operating system. When that happens, some things will become unintelligible. This happens, specially, when using downloaded custom fonts, not thought for use in an operating system's user interface, but just for publishing. An operating system needs additional characters, that a novel or blog doesn't.
