The media installation usb flash /dvd tool can be used to upgrade as well but you have to do it within windows 7 or 8.1 from my understanding.
I could use the W7 dvd to upgrade to repair 7 previously but since replaced starting with 8 by the PC Refresh option no longer allowing any repairs to an existing Windows installation. The live boot from the flash as well as trying a direct upgrade while booted first in the cloned host 7 and just now with a fresh copy of 7 still gets me nowhere with the 7 desktop returned being prompted that the 10 install failed without anything to go by as far as WHY? this repeats.

Upon the previous attempt I traced what seemed like the possible problem to an error saying system partition invalid while booted in 7 to see an upgrade repair install performed on the clone while everything was still present as far as programs and device drivers, etc. The invalid error prompted for a total wipe of the drive to be followed by a fresh clean install of 7 where the SP1 slipstreamed usb install key was found to be lacking SP! Just my day for sure!!!

Well simply add that or find that it is already included when the check for updates is run but later the Control Panel>System only shows 7 Ultimate and not 7 Ultimate SP1 like it should for the time being while the updates history shows it went right on without a hitch! Will now be running the tool to try for another download to see the dvd as well as two flash drives never saw the correct write take place or it's simply not my turn for the upgrade still not having seen the supposed email notification come in as of yet. The prompt you saw earlier simply confirmed what I had mentioned earlier about the people being randomized not all from one place at any one time.

After upgrading successfully to W10 I ran Disk Cleanup and that got rid of the $Windows~BT folder. The other hidden folder $Windows~WS is still there and I won't be touching it until I know it's safe to do so.

    Follow-up to above
Have just seen on the Windows Insider Community forum that it's ok to delete both folders as they are just temporary folders.
With a clean install of 7 just tended to I found the exact same $Windows~BT folder present as well on a freshly repartitioned note as well as freshly formatted primary when using the 7 installer's drive tools rather then fuss with DiskPart or any other partitioning program to see the fast 7 install go on. The WS folder on the other hand has the installation files and folders contained there which may be used by the PC Refresh option in 10 as well as for 8 and 8.1 but came after 7. You might want to hang onto that for the time being to look over while I doubt the refresh option resorts to that for recovery but allows you to create upgrade media with the right steps followed.

I'm pretty sure I already posted this but anyway. I was stuck at Validating or Almost Ready on 3 PC's, for hours and hours. I finally just gave up and used the Media Creation Tool. I didn't create any install media. I just used the "Upgrade this PC now" option and did it all live via the internet. It downloaded all the files needed just like the GWX App does and then did the upgrade. Very painless experience. All three PC's are now running Windows 10. I even did my other PC that was running build 10240, it did the upgrade as well. No product keys were asked for.

I also ran the Media Creation Tool to upgrade over my W7 Home Premium install. Everything went smoothly and all the programs I had installed in W7 are working properly. I also have my W8.1 Pro install on another SSD, but don't plan to upgrade over that. Haven't decided whether I want to upgrade my W7 Laptop yet, but I have until 7/29/16 to decide.

just out of curiosity, why did you do it to the machine that was already running 10240?
did you notice anything different after you did?

I just wanted to see if it would actually do the upgrade or tell me it was already upgraded. I wasn't expecting it to actually do anything, but it went through the whole upgrade process. There has been a big discussion on whether 10240 was what everybody else was going get via the free upgrade. I was also left wondering what I had to do to make 10240 the official consumer release, or if I could without doing a reinstall of Windows 7 + upgrade to 10. I had stopped insider builds and it stayed activated. Then just for fun did the upgrade anyway via the Media Creation Tool. It did two updates after the upgrade. Not sure what ever that means? I haven't checked if my other PC's got them also or not yet.

I was just curious; when I first joined the insiders program, I had win 7 home on my machine, and the program "upgraded" to me win 10 pro.
I am wondering if I ever do a "clean install", will I be downgraded to win 10 home, or, will I remain on win 10 pro...

How did you install the Insider preview? If you did an upgrade you should have got 10 Home? I upgraded one PC with Windows 8.1 Core and got 10 Home.

i did an upgrade when I joined windows insiders several months ago, and I had win 7 home; I was pleasantly surprised that I was upgraded to win 10 pro, and thats why I have not been anxious to do a clean install, for fear of losing the "pro" upgrade..
Its not that big of a deal, but my upgraded machine is running pretty nicely, and I always believe in leaving "well enough" alone..

I'm not sure what will happen on a clean install? Install Pro and see if it activates? If it doesn't, install Home and see if that works.
