    Start Screen Size

I have W10 Pro installed on my Dell Desktop (1703.15063.483) and W10 Home on my Acer Laptop (1703.15063.540). Both are upgrades to W10. Desktop from W8 and the laptop W7.

On the laptop my Start screen has room for 6 medium size icons across. The desktop it only has room for 4 icons. I cannot widen the desktop or the laptop any farther. The double arrow appears but dragging it farther right does not change the width. The resolution for each machine is set to the recommended values.

How can I get the number of icons per row on the desktop to be 6.

    Thank you.

Go into settings and unlock the start menu or make it full screen.

I found how to show the Start Menu full screen but couldn't find how to unlock it. Please tell me how.

The Start menu can be widened by dragging it only if there is enough room for a further group of the three (or four) tiles.

The default number of tiles is three, but is changed to four in Settings > Personalization > Start by turning on 'show more tiles on Start'. Try turning this off on your desktop so it's Start is three tiles wide, you may then be able to drag and widen it to six, as on your laptop. It would seem your desktop doesn't have enough room for eight tiles, but it may have room for six.

Thank you. That makes it close enough to what I want.

Glad I could help. As you seem to have limited space for your Start menu tiles, you may find this useful...
Starting with Windows 10 build 15002, you can now now be able to group your Start tiles into folders. Tile folders are a way for you to organize and personal your tiles in Start...
Create and Use Live Folders on Start in Windows 10

Your 1703 is build 15063, so this new feature is available to you.
