    Windows on screen locked

Having an issue on one of my systems, and have no idea what the issue is.

I am running two monitors, already checked display drivers, and made sure the computer wasn't in tablet mode.

The issue I'm having is when the computer starts up, everything is fine, but after about 30 seconds of it being fully booted and ready for use, all the windows on the screen seem like they lock. You can minimize them, or maximize them, but cannot move them. I've looked through everything on the internet I can find, and even moved to a restore date from a month ago. Problem just started yesterday mid morning. It doesn't give any errors, just cannot move the screens. But I can drag and drop icons on the desktop, and click and make a selection there, but to highlight text for example in word isn't possible either. Really strange problem. Any ideas?

Hi thebus71h. Welcome to the TenForums @thebus71h

Could you check your Windows update history. Have any updates or drivers been applied in last few days?

You said after about 30 seconds they lock. Do they ever unlock?

Have you tried a clean boot to see if this is being influence by third party software?

Have you used the Advance Startup options to boot through to safe mode to see if behavior persists?

Fast way to get this started, hold shift key down and click restart.

I'll try safe mode to see if it still does it. But no, they do not ever become unlocked. It's a very, very strange problem. I'll get back to you when I check in safe mode.

Safe mode everything worked fine like it should. What i'm finding is that everything works normally if I hold shift while clicking and moving a window around the screen. Same thing with highlighting.

I've re-installed drivers, and looked at everything I can see. But nothing about this screens moving with shift only.

Also holding CTRL makes it work as well. Same as highlighting text. I've made sure there aren't any sticky keys or anything funny going on as well.

    Did you try Clean boot.

As I understand it in Safe Mode windows reverts to a default display driver, very basic. It also doesn't start all the "Other" stuff.

I think the clean boot is the next step.

Are you using any "Tweaking" / "Utility" / "Alternate Start Menu" type software?

No. There isn't anything special about it. There has to be a keystroke that she hit or something to cause this to be happening. I really do not want to rebuild the system unless I have to as it takes forever to get them back up and running with the software we have. This is like the other 30 systems we have in the building.

Like I said, I reinstalled the video drivers, and that did nothing, no windows utilities that I've tried have done anything, but if I hold CTRL, everything works just fine.

And when I say i reinstalled the video drivers, I deleted them, and installed the long way.

Myself I would try the clean boot. This uses the drivers and as I understand it prevents other software, even software related to display adapter, like GeForce, from starting.

I looked at a list of Keyboard short cuts and cannot find one that applies except maybe Windows Key + O but not sure locking or unlocking orientation even applies to this device.

Wish I had better idea. Maybe another member has solution.

I'll try the clean boot and see where that gets me and report back. Thanks for the guidance so far.
