msconfig won't let me choose "Normal Startup" - reverts to Selective

When I run msconfig, it shows that Selective Startup is selected. I click on Normal Startup - but as soon as I select "OK", it reverts back to Selective Startup. Thank you.

    Hello Nisko, :)

    This is normal.

Having the two items checked below under "Selective startup" is essentially the same as having "Normal startup" selected.

OK, thank you. But it seems odd that I cannot select normal startup as an option. I performed a clean boot and Normal Startup was selected when I ran msconfig - now I can't get it back. Also, under certain conditions, there is a black square inside the "Load System Services" check box - and sometimes there is a check mark. Plz explain.

Yeah, "Normal startup" is selected by default, but it won't remain selected after any change is made.

It is still a "Normal startup" though with those two items checked under "Selective startup".

Thank you! What's the square box mean?

If you mean the checkbox, it's to check or uncheck for selecting.

Under msconfig, there is a selection named "Load System Services." I know what the checkbox is for. What I'm trying to say is: sometimes I can get a checkmark in the box - and sometimes I get a smaller black (filled in) box inside the checkbox. I think it's strange - but the difference must mean something.

Generally they mean that pre-selected items have been set.
