    PC shutdown during Windows start-up. Fine again after mains off.

    Hello everyone,

    I sincerely hope someone can help. My PC turns off or freezes during Windows first boot screen. If it turns off, it is whilst the loading circle of circles is rotating. If it freezes, I don't see the rotating circle. If I then reboot my machine, it powers on but only shows a black screen.

    However, if I turn the power off at the mains socket for about 10 seconds and then turn the power back on, the PC starts as normal with no further error. There are occasions when I turn on the PC and have no problem but the issue is more common than not.

    I assumed this was a problem with my power pack and replaced it for a new one (750 Watt) but I retain the same problem. I have scoured the internet but I am mainly finding help for people who have a perpetual issue, not one that is sporadic.

    I have reseated all of my components and reset the bios battery in a vein hope of fixing the problem. All to no avail.

    Any advice is truly welcome.

    Hi baq99. Welcome to the TenForums @baq99.

    As a quick test to see if this is related to Windows Fast Startup could you enter this command to Command Prompt(admin)

    Powercfg -h off

    This shuts off hibernation which disables Windows Fast Start up.


    If this fixes then you can turn hibernation back on

    Powercfg -h on

    and disable Windows Fast Start up using our tutorial.

    I've turned off Fast Startup using the command prompt and had no problems restarting. Because the problem is sporadic I'll wait a day or so to see if the problem re-occurs. I thought I'd post this as a place holder to let you know I'm not ignoring your reply.

    Windows 10 Home x64 (Laptop), Windows 10 Pro x64 (Desktop)

    Check you have the latest version of the BIOS for your PC / motherboard and that it supports Windows 10. Also, check that your drivers are up to date. Is this a new problem which started after a recent software update?

    Hi Steve C,

    Yes, I always keep my drivers up to date and the components are windows 10 compatible. I have also flashed the bios to the latest version, although you are quite correct, it's always a good idea to keep everything in tip top condition.

    Caledon Ken,

    After two days of testing, the symptoms have not re-arisen so I'm guessing you got a hole in one with this I used to fix computers for a living and am usually pretty savvy with these things but this one really had me stumped. Thank you so much for your help!
