Let's use the DM collector to post it: BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste these commands:

    1) winver (in the pop up view your windows version and build and post into the thread.)
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) chkdsk /scan

When the 4 commands have completed: right click on the top bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click edit then select all > right click the top bar again > left click edit then copy > paste into the thread.

    There was a bsod today.
    Code:
    BugCheck 9F, {3, ffffca8fae40b060, ffff8881722eaa60, ffffca8faa963530}

    Probably caused by : usbhub.sys
    Code:
    usbhub.sys
    Default Hub Driver for USB
    Windows Update
    Code:
    btfilter.sys
    Atheros Bluetooth Driver
    Official site: http://www.qualcomm.com/drivers
    Unofficial site: http://www.atheros.cz
Open device manager > Uninstall Atheros Bluetooth driver > install the most up to date driver from you computer manufacturer's or Qualcom's web site.

    mlkumidi is mlkumidi.sys
    MusicLab Virtual MIDI Device driver
    MusicLab - Download

Do you see anything related to this on your computer? Please search.

Place your computer in clean boot to see if there is any impact on the splash screen and to check performance:

How to perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 - TechNet Articles - United States (English) - TechNet Wiki

Once you have used your computer for a reasonable period of time to check performance in clean boot (boot on and off a few times evaluating start and shut down times too) make changes fast startup by turning it on.
Again check performance. Then after a period of time turn it off again.
Let us know if either clean boot or restarting and then turning off fast startup has any impact on the splash screen.

I think, instead of a specialist, I need a priest to perform an exorcism.

Now, seriously, after your previous post, where you mentioned the Atheros driver etc. I rebooted and the splash screen returned immediately as if it had never been away, however, now the screen flicker is back.

I have, in the mean time, performed the clean boot, same thing, splash screen present, reasonably fast boot, but with the flicker.
I shall now follow the advice you gave in the previous post.

    Thanks again.

After the clean boot (even before that) I have had a reasonable fast startup, with splash screen, both with fast startup turned on and off.

However, I made a small mistake (maybe a good thing I did) on one occasion when I selected Shut Down instead of Restart, and then I had the whole Splash screen misery again and a skuggisg startup after I managed to get the splash screen up.

Don't know if that rings any bells?

Thank you for all the help so far.

What is your impression of clean boat versus normal boot for each: performance while using the computer. boot and shut down, and especially ability to boot to splash screen.
What is your impression of no fast startup versus fast start up for each of the above too.
Were you able to uninstall the Atheros bluetoot driver and find an up to date replacement?
Were you able to search and find: mlkumidi or mlkumidi.sys or Musiclab or midi device driver?

    Clean boot v Normal:
On one occasion the machine refused to boot in clean boot mode altogether.
When it eventually did, it booted up very slowly and it ran at a snail's pace and the CPU and disk use went sky high at times.
    Restarting also took its time.

Normal boot went quite smoothly starting up and restarting, and the laptop ran at a nice pace, without any real problems.

Once again, in any mode, shutting down the machine instead of restarting causes the whole splash screen problem.

Regarding the Fast start-up mode: there is not a lot of difference, although, maybe I would say the machine boots slightly faster with Fast start-up enabled.

I have managed to deal with the Atheros and Musiclab drivers, although getting hold of a correct and up-to -date Atheros driver is a NIGHTMARE! The Atheros site itself says they do not provide drivers, the .cz site says the domain is for sale, and then there is a site where you have to go looking through hundreds of Atheros drivers, but I managed.

Now for the other problem that has arisen: the flickering screen.
This started after I did a clean boot for the first time.
I have been able to solve it once with starting in safe mode, but it came back, and now, when I start in safe mode, th flickering stops, I see a second Generic PnP monitor in Device Manager with a yellow triangle, but as soon as I restart in normal mode, the flicker is back in all its glory, this is really (and literally) giving me a headache.

This is the update so far.
    Thank you.

The windows version that you are using is 1607 and the latest version is 1703.
There may be operating system/registry problems that are not detected with the scannow and restorehealth methods.
Consider upgrading to 1703 now to see if this fixes the flash screen problem.
