A couple of questions concerning Windows 10.....

    Hi,

It seems that every single time I get my USB 3 Hard drive to boot with my computer NVIDIA releases a new driver and for some strange reason the hard drive will no longer auto boot with the computer so then I have to get up, turn it off and back on in order for it to register. Is there a sure fire way to make sure updates don't affect how my hard drive boots? It's quite annoying.

The second issue I have, I have a dual monitor set up as I'm a graphics artists so need that... I have iTunes start up on that monitor so it's out of the way... if I go to turn up the volume in iTunes I get this huge "2" like you would get when your asking the system to identify the monitors and what order you have them as first and secondary. Another annoyance I'd love to fix.

Thanks so much for your help!
    Richard :)

    Hi Richard.

My recommendation for your first problem is stop accepting NVIDIA updates. While we want modern drivers but my approach is "if it ain't broken, don't fix it."

So I would set NVIDIA to stop and I would set windows to stop. This article has a couple of registry hacks, one to enable and one to disable.

    One member's opinion.

Looked into your second issue and really don't have anything to offer. I know you can get windows to identify but yours seems to be issuing the call on every switch. Maybe doing a clean boot to see if some third party software is making the call.

Do you have any "Tweaking" tools installed?

    Hi Ken,

I used to have tweaking tools installed but when I upgraded to Windows 10 and now with the new rig that came with Windows 10 Pro I really haven't had a need to install any tweaking programs. The only thing I have is the 8Gadget Pack for Win 10 as I love my side bar. This strangeness only pops up when I'm using iTunes from my observations so that's kinda weird.

I kinda figured that stopping the NVIDIA updates MIGHT be a solution but installing them never affected my previous installation of Windows 10 or 8 or 8.1 or 7 or XP. So this seems to some weird thing with the driver code I think. But why would it kill the auto start command for a USB drive? Unless the USB 3 ports are somehow being commanded to not go live until needed? I have all the tweaks I could do under the Power Management area so they would boot and stay on when Windows was booting up. I don't run a laptop so I really don't have a need to worry about battery life or what not.

    Thanks for the help!

For the second problem, while it is far from ideal, consider the keyboard F key method to modulate the volume until you find a fix for the itunes/dual monitor problem..

This could be a fastboot issue. Try turning off fastboot and see if issue goes away next time. Fastboot is not so essential if using an ssd these days.
