Windows Booting But Start Up Screen Won't Go Away

    I got a weird one.

My Windows 10 Pro has been running great, but all the sudden today I get a problem.

I turned on my PC, get the blue start up screen with the spinning dot. I hear the start up music, but no desktop. There is activity of the drive being read, machine is not dead or froze. If I click anywhere on the blue screen, it flickers and stays. I go ahead and type my password in and the screen flickers again, but no desktop. But I hear the usual beep of my apps that load at login, the drive light is flickering, but no desktop. All I see is the blue window with the spinning dots. The PC seems to be logged in and running, but I can't see the desktop.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Problem seems to be related to today's (9 May) update because I now have the same problem on my laptop after it updated.

Yep, they made a couple of display items that deal with fonts.

    • Addressed issue where fonts appear differently based on whether an app uses Graphics Device Interface (GDI) or GDI Plus.

Got the laptop back up using system restore via recovery disk. The PC is still borked, system restore keeps failing no matter what date I chose.

Your only choice will to be blow away the install and reinstall windows. Make a copy of your drive image after you get everything on it and then defer the Major and Minor Windows updates so that it does not happen again.

The OP already stated that their machine is beyond rolling back to another restore point. Doing so will just make matters worse.
