How long can you keep Windows.old?

I upgraded to CU last week and am having a few issues, none of which can't be worked out given some time. However, I've heard that Windows.old only has a shelf-life of 10 days.

Is this true? Can I move it to another drive (or rename it) if I decide, after another week or so, that CU is a bother right now and I need to go back to AE?

    Thanks.

My Windows.old arrived on 27 April after a clean re-install and is still there, 11 days later..

It's supposed to be removed automatically by Disk Cleanup after 10 days. Something may be strange on your system. I've run into several cases on my own PCs where one or more drivers (often audio, either Intel or RealTek) remains linked into the runtime image. Thus, even if you run Disk Cleanup manually a shadow/ghost of Windows.old remains behind because the OS is still grabbing and using drivers from the old image. This usually requires booting to alternate media (so the drivers won't be loaded) and then performing a manual delete to clean up. Check the contents of your Windows.old: if all that's left are some drivers, this could describe your situation and a possible cure. If not, the same cure will work, but I'd be curious to learn more about what's going on, so please keep us posted.

Thanks for the help but I restored the AE version. Got tired of booting to no-text icons and applications.

    Let's mark this solved.
