It's a descriptor for exact power plan. Normally, user have at least "balanced" , "High performance" and "Power saver" power plans.
High performance wont go to sleep easily and you can set it to never go to sleep. Balanced is that most of us are using.

You get GUID descriptor by typing powercfg /l (the last letter is small L) and you can set desired power plan by typing

powercfg /s [GUID of the power plan]

So this plan is not elegant, but could work.

Because sometimes I am downloading games from Steam or Origin that are 45 GB or more and take a few hours to install. Right now I am redownloading Mass Effect Andromeda which is taking a long time. Once it's done and I go to sleep or work, then I'll put the computer to sleep. It just annoys me when it's on when I come home because somebody bumped into it or something.

You can easy set computer to not go to sleep while downloading :) If you don't trust power settings, there are programs that prevent PC to go to sleep. Or just run internet radio (it's minimal bandwidth ...).

Why don`t you just tell whoever to stay away from your PC ?

Personally, I would never put my pc to sleep if I was going to sleep or work. I would just turn it off.

I agree, it's probably time you have a nice little one on one talk with whoever keeps unplugging that and explain why you do what you do.

Because they don't care.

And shutting it down and starting up puts more wear and tear on the components.

I tried, he won't listen. He complains his power bill is extremely high but I'm not the one with the TVs on all day.

Was thinking about your problem Guy, changing power profiles isn't very practical and am also not sure, if it'll work at logoff without login first...

Just set profile for sleep (i.e. short time, 2 or 5 mins) and run a program that prevents PC to go into sleep when working.

Don't Sleep is donationware. Basically freeware and clean of viruses, according to virustotal. This program will prevent Windows to go to sleep. just set it to run at startup.

Next step is to find out what brings your PC from sleep when you are away. We can deal with that later

Well, I wasn't able to get this solved, so I don't know what to do at this point.
