You still need to have a registered license for either windows 10 pro or home. One licence doe not serve both !
Whichever is associaed with your live/outlook account or UEFI bios is the version activated
Not anymore. Just need a licensed edition of Windows 7 or 8.x now with Creators. Microsoft is seeing less people move up to this new roll up, because they have scared everyone into believing that they will not be able to use Windows as it was before.

Microsoft marketing is now of course dealing with the fallout by issuing the statements to tell people to hold off upgrading, even though the servers are pushing the force the upgrade out to the users KB.

This is as bad of marketing as it was with Vista, 8 and now 10. Really do not know how it could get any worse, other than that people will not understand the three app store choices. Even I found the Settings menu a bit more confusing with the new changes that Microsoft has put into it.

True, but as this machine is already running Windows 10 Pro you can skip entering a key when asked. A clean install of Pro should activate automatically from the existing digital licence.
It did not give me that option, since I had put the Anniversary edition on her machine when I rolled her off of Linux Mint. It is only Clean Installs with Windows that I do, since it lessens the headaches in dealing with her having to deal with Windows issues at work every day. Happy Wife, Happy Life.

ok, you said windows 10 has already been installed on this machine?
If it has then the windows 7 or 8 licence is already used/converted and if windows is reinstalled, youcan skip entering an activation key during install as previously mentioned. Wildows will activate once you have finshed installing. Assuming you are connected to the internet that is.

This has always been the way windows 10 activates "Free" not just creators update.
I have used genuine windows 7 and windows 8 installations to update to windows 10 since release date.

BTW... The version of windows which should be installed and that will be activated is clearly indicated on the licencing key on the machine.

I ended up downloading the ISO and doing a clean install on my wife's laptop. If this is going to be the case, I think that I will end up telling her that her laptop is "Broken", to get her off of Windows 10 and just use the Macbook. I do not have to go through a huge headache of clean install of the OS, install Office and setup offline with each time Apple rolls out a new OS. Every time I have to upgrade Windows on her laptop, it takes about three days of my time to do it so that I am not dealing with headaches down the road if it was a roll-up update.
Interesting. I just inserted the Creator's Update on USB flash drive in my wife's laptop and ran Setup.exe. Within one hour it was done. A couple days later she asks me - "Did you ever put the big update on my computer you said it needed?" Yes, ma'am. Two days ago! My mother-in-law has no clue what build of Windows 10 her computer is on. I've upgrade that one all the way from Windows 10 build 10240 to Creator's Update, each major build update taking about 1 hour, and she has no clue at all. I just remote into her computer via RDP every now and then and make sure it is taking automatic updates and do a whole system back up for her about once a week because she runs her bookkeeping business from it.

Windows 10 is on over 400 million devices now. Sure we can think we need to do clean installs every major new build. But probably 390 million of those devices are going to get it via upgrade of their existing Windows 10.

jl2509. If you use a clean hard drive or have Linux on a har drive and want to install Windows 10, you can install the Anniversary edition and it will activate under the old rules if you select to activate later during the install.

If you try to install the Creators Update on a machine that you did not have Windows 7 or 8.x on the hard drive, you cannot do a upgrade install. Your only choice is to use your old key for Windows 7 or 8 and you can activate Creators under the old licensing rules that Microsoft went back to.

The bad part is that you will be installing all software if you try to use a ISO of Creators, since they have changed the policy as I stated above.
