Which battery critical behaviour is more secure:shutdown or hibernate?

    Dear forum readers,

Today I decided to disable hibernation on my system, and I set my battery critical action to shutdown.

However, while I don't like the idea of Windows dumping gigabytes on my SSD, I'm not convinced it's worse than a system shutdown in a critical battery situation.

Imho, the most interesting one would be the one that requires the least power to complete, but which one is it ? Whatever it is, the operation should better finish before battery is out...

I suppose the system shutdown when battery is critical is equivalent to "shutdown /s /f /t 0", but time and power drain may vary depending on what is running. Maybe there can even be cases where the shutdown is significantly delayed or even interrupted by some driver.

On the other hand, hibernation writes a huge amount on the disk, which can be even bigger if some big program is running, which would be power consuming too. Moreover, I don't know to which extent it can be delayed/interrupted.

    Any thoughts ?

As you can set a value for the critical power level, you can ensure there's enough power to complete either. In the Advanced power settings for my power plan I have mine set at 5%.

Personally I like to use hibernate so that I can carry on from where I left off once I can plug in the power supply. Been doing it that way since Windows 95, through XP, W7 and now W10.

Since W95, really ? Considering how unstable it was back then, you must have experienced your share of problems...

My critical power level is 5% too, it's likely the default.

Not really, only when the battery was beyond its useable life. A healthy battery gave no problems. My default way to 'shutdown' was always to close the lid and hibernate. In 95 the reliability of hibernation very much depended on your OEM, mine was Toshiba and seemed to be OK.

Windows 95 supports hibernation through hardware manufacturer-supplied drivers and only if compatible hardware and BIOS are present.
