    Dell laptop locks up


    I have a Dell E6500 which locks up when left idle for some period of time.


    This computer was sold new with Vista. When I bought it used it came with Windows 7 Professional. I have since upgraded it to Windows 10 Professional.


    I have had this problem running both 7 and 10. I have never put a timer to it, but leave it on and inactive for a while and it will freeze. Screen is black, nothing works, not mouse, not keyboard. All I can do is turn it off. When I do, I must hold the power button for 5 seconds. When it reboots, Windows comes back to where it was when I turned it off
    .

    One work-around I use is to close the lid and let it go to sleep. When I raise the lid it wakes up a lot quicker than the time it takes to reboot. But if I forget, it's turn it off and then back on.


    Any and all hints, suggestions and guesses are welcome.

    I'm assuming you've ran a system file check ? If not it sure wouldn't hurt and may help. Have you ran a memory diagnostic? Its a fairly old machine, might want to check that. Have you checked for chipset updates and/or Bios' updates?
