If you can get to a cmd prompt and you have legacy bios type in the following:

    BootRec / FixBoot
    BootRec / FixMBr
BootRec / RebuildBCD --Do this ONLY if you have too.
I just finished successfully burning the bootable rescue disk to DVD using Brasero. I'll first try to pull up a cmd prompt using the Windows 10 installer thumb drive and I'll try your commands above. If I have no luck or can't pull up a cmd prompt I'll give the rescue disk a try. I'll post back here in a bit with an update.

I ran the following in the cmd prompt of the recovery CD I burned:

    x:\windows\system32>BootRec /FixBoot
    x:\windows\system32>BootRec /FixMBR

both said completed successfully, but it was instantaneous and didn't seem to do anything. I still can't boot into windows. I'm not sure if I did it right - should the cmd prompt say "x:\windows\system32>"?

I tried it from the Windows installer thumb drive and ran into the same issue. I'm not sure if I'm entering the commend right.

I haven't tried "RebuildBCD" yet because I'm not sure I'm doing this correctly. I have a feeling the boorec.exe is the key here to fixing my PC, but I don't know if I'm doing it correctly. Here's a page that discusses this:

You heve to CD yourself out of X: and into C: CD X: C: then do those commands. You will get there..

Ah, okay - I should know how to CD out and to the right place but I'm always confused how to do that. Right now I'm at:

    C:\>

    in the cmd prompt.

Good no type in those commans one at a time BootRec / FixBoot
    then BootRec / FixMBR

then try to boot without doing that last one.

YES! My PC has booted back into Windows! I can't thank you enough!

At first I still got the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected device and press a key." message, but then I rebooted again this time hitting F12, to pull up the boot selector, and I manually selected the first option "Windows Boot Manager", and it booted right into my desktop like nothing ever happened.

So what's the next step? Should I run chkdsk on both my C drive and my 2nd data drive now to be sure everything is okay?

And what can I do to see what happened here to begin with? Now I'm afraid to play a video again in media player classic. I've had nothing like this happen since I've been using my PC. I've had media players crash a few times, but it never took down the OS like this before. What could have happened?

Also there's a "Recovery.txt" file in my C: root now. Is it safe to get rid of that? It's empty.

remove that if it is empty. I to play it safe would run a chkdsk from a CMD Prompt. If you want to thank me press that thumbs up button on the far left. I am very happy that I was able to help you. You may want to download Macrium Reflect 7.0 it is a free backup program where you can image or clone your HD. You should be able to get it here: Download Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - MajorGeeks . Welcome to TF BTW:

The boot sector may have failed.
    Hey Josey-
Just in here for a minute...
If you can figure out how to get him into Kyhi's recovery environment, Macrium is there - he can try the FIXBOOT option.
