Win 10 CU 1703 search function issue with third parts applications

    hello

as the title say, it's my problem.

    the problem:

press windows key and start typing "control panel" or "notepad" or "paint" ecc... the search function
    WORKS

but, if i start searching for my custom app, fox example "teracopy", "opera browser" ecc, the search function not find anything.

the sfc/scannow command not report any issue, the search function troubleshoot not find any error.

I had upgrade to Creators update with "inplace method" and my user folder is moved (with proprieties->move folder) in another Hard disk (d:), i don't know if it's related.

    Anybody can suggest any help?

    thanks

I have the exact same problem, and I found some workaround
    none definitive for now:

    1. Create a new user account, then search seems to work

    2. Create a new install media (usb) and perform a clean install
now search for third party programs seems to work lets se
    if it will work...

    3. install previous win 10 version and upgrade with upgrade assistant to 1703,
it worked for a couple of days, then search was freezing/not finding
    third parts applications

Being tired to beta test I decided to revert
my PC to original OS windows 8.1 and it works
very well, search work properly I can find files
apps, third parts application, .exe files everything
faster than win 7, faster than win 10

My New PC with win 10 will wait to be used when
hopefully a fix will be released, or it will become a linux
machine when linux will catch up with hardware support.

It would be interesting to know if Classic Shell start menu search works in the same scenario. (free, excellent).
If so, you have an easy work-around that lets you use your PC, and gives you a properly configurable more convenient search field.

And if you want instant file/folder search virtually anywhere, go 3rd party, free.
(Locate32, Ultrasearch, Everything by Void Tools).

(I know that doesn't fix the problem; I don't have that build and I'm avoiding it for some months- just being pragmatic).

I know Classic Shell, it seems a good tool,
in fact i prefer how win 8.1/10 search works from an user interface
perspective because is quite similar to Gnome/Unity dash and
I find myself confident on such an interface.
Windows 8.1 search function is actually quite good,
I really wonder how they managed to screw things so much
    in win 10

    I understand you, blueskyler...

    Picture this:

The above screenshot means that in my system I have decided to index almost everything, and especially my C: drive, no matter the fact that I am using an SSD. Does Windows Search work? NO-WAY...

I can find some system applications, like the ones you mentioned!
I can find Office 2016 applications!
It even finds some 3rd party programs, like the awesome J. River Media Center I'm using (for years)

It does not find anything else, though... It does not find programs, it does not find files...

Additionally, I have many times set the Indexed Locations, shown in the screenshot, to my C drive, ONLY! I always untick Internet Explorer and Outlook. It never keeps the setting! It keeps reselecting both of them!

The only real solution is to rely to 3rd party applications for Search. I have not performed this yet, I have not used any of them yet. Because, you know, I feel like... ...if an OS cannot even keep up with the Search function... then... Jesus...

You can't find executables of various types - not just exe- from Cortana search, even if indexed (and you can only find indexed items using Cortana search) last I tried (an MS design decision for 'security' I believe). Oh, and no reg. exp. either there.

If you really love command-line syntax, try file explorer search using Advanced Query Syntax to specify file kind, size and date range etc etc.... Oh, and that supports reg. exp. too.

But what gets me about that is that if I have, say, H: open in file explorer, and only one folder is indexed, it takes minutes to find the indexed items. (Green progress creepy bar)

Cortana search does work well for some system features and start menu items. Heck, I've even tried 'Hey Cortana, open Finereader' and had it launch Abbyy Finereader. Not bad with just the mike on my laptop.

And search in Settings works well.

But for me, trouble-free Classic Shell and Locate32 (instant search tool) are what I rely on.

Agreed, prayer is a powerful tool. However, I've not heard of that search engine...

Cortana is not available in my country and when it will finally become, I will disable it anyway, like I am currently doing through my Group Policy Editor:

In my post, I was replying to the Topic Starter’s post regarding searching via the Start Menu. I was aware of File Explorer’s superior search functionality, thanks for reminding me, I’ve just rechecked it and everything I searched through it, it found, almost immediately. All kinds of files, system files, applications, images and documents, everything, Explorer search has found in my system.

The search function in Settings, I have tried 1st time just now. In my system, it does not find anything besides the Windows functions in Settings and (perhaps) in the Control Panel. For example, typing “PowerShell” in Settings/Search, does not give an option to open PowerShell, just the option to replace PowerShell with CMD in Win+X menu.

In any case, the OP referred to the Start Menu search. And to that I referred as well, as the most convenient manner to Search your computer. If crippled for “”security””, as you say, then…

I do not understand the meaning of your last sentence.

.if an OS cannot even keep up with the Search function... then... Jesus...
    - my response to that last sentence. In a more respectful kind of way.

    hello guys.

As reported the fix for the problem described in the OP, is creating a new user profile.

For backup your profile setting(background, desktop icon ecc..) i use Transwiz 1.10 software.

After this my search function works fine. :)

    I hope this helps. :)
