    Bizarre Things at 4AM

Several times in the last month or so, generally like 4AM or thereabouts, I am awakened to a sound like ding-ding-ding. Not a phone ring, not exactly a bell, but electronic in origin (it seems). After the dings, I hear a vague woman's voice. It is muffled. It is not coming from outside my apt. My phones are set to silent at night. I am alone. The dings from last night were pretty loud. My computer's sound is directed to headphones which were not near me. This has happened a few times in the last 2 or so months.

I noticed in the event viewer some entries from 3AM to 4:15AM or thereabouts. Not odd in itself. Things update or install in the early morning hours. And perhaps these are all benign and not the origin of this sound.

    At 3:34AM there's this entry:
The Software Protection service is starting.Parameters:caller=CompatTelRunner.exe

I'm running Windows10, so why is this running at all? Can I delete it safely? The next entry is
    Initialization status for service objects.C:\WINDOWS\system32\sppwinob.dll, msft:spp/windowsfunctionality/agent/7.0, 0x00000000, 0x00000000C:\WINDOWS\system32\sppobjs.dll, msft:rm/algorithm/inherited/1.0, 0x00000000, 0x00000000C:\WINDOWS\system32\sppobjs.dll, msft:rm/algorithm/phone/1.0, 0x00000000, 0x00000000C:\WINDOWS\system32\sppobjs.dll, msft:rm/algorithm/pkey/detect, 0x00000000, 0x00000000C:\WINDOWS\system32\sppobjs.dll, msft:spp/ActionScheduler/1.0, 0x00000000, 0x00000000C:\WINDOWS\system32\sppobjs.dll, msft:spp/TaskScheduler/1.0, 0x00000000, 0x00000000C:\WINDOWS\system32\sppobjs.dll, msft:spp/statecollector/pkey, 0x00000000, 0x00000000C:\WINDOWS\system32\sppobjs.dll, msft:spp/volume/services/kms/1.0, 0x00000000, 0x00000000C:\WINDOWS\system32\sppobjs.dll, msft:spp/volume/services/kms/activationinfo/1.0, 0x00000000, 0x00000000

    And then:
    The Software Protection service has completed licensing status check.Application Id=55c92734-d682-4d71-983e-d6ec3f16059fLicensing Status=1: 0567073a-7d74-403b-b2d5-6b35da372d8d, 1, 0 [(0 [0xC004F014, 0, 0], [(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)])(1 )(2 )(3 )]2: 1b750385-9fe2-49a8-ab55-149d0546395b, 1, 0 [(0 [0xC004F014, 0, 0], [(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)])(1 )(2 )(3 )]3: 1d873132-f09f-4eb2-bf5a-2e4fb48935e8, 1, 0 [(0 [0xC004F014, 0, 0], [(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)])(1 )(2 )(3 )]4: 2b1f36bb-c1cd-4306-bf5c-a0367c2d97d8, 1, 1 [(0 )(1 )(2 [0x00000000, 1, 0], [(?)( 1 0x00000000)(?)(?)(?)(?)( 10 0x00000000 msft:rm/algorithm/flags/1.0)(?)])(3 )]5: 30d469c6-a78f-4476-b5c8-af78d5b6a5fb, 1, 0 [(0 [0xC004F014, 0, 0], [(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)])(1 )(2 )(3 )]6: 411b3d4f-be6d-4a06-baaa-9cabfc256cae, 1, 0 [(0 [0xC004F014, 0, 0], [(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)])(1 )(2 )(3 )]7: 58e97c99-f377-4ef1-81d5-4ad5522b5fd8, 1, 0 [(0 [0xC004F014, 0, 0], [(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)])(1 )(2 )(3 )]8: 74436dbb-cc17-46de-867f-14906ba4a938, 1, 0 [(0 [0xC004F014, 0, 0], [(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)])(1 )(2 )(3 )]9: 8db63db6-4f8f-46d6-a448-66444faaaa72, 1, 0 [(0 [0xC004F014, 0, 0], [(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)])(1 )(2 )(3 )]10: e371d89a-73e8-4b24-a7ff-23a3641dd18e, 1, 0 [(0 [0xC004F014, 0, 0], [(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)(?)])(1 )(2 )(3 )]

And then a series of "SideBySide" errors like this one:

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Phone Tools\14.0\Debugger\target\armv4i\vsgraphicsremoteengine.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls,language="*",processorArchitecture="arm",publicKeyToken="6595b64144ccf1df",type="win32 ",version="6.0.0.0" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

I'm not sure they are related to the weird sounds.

    Any thoughts would be welcome.

Better call Ghostbusters! Do you have to leave your PC powered up at night? If this were my issue, I'd shut everything electronic down at night and see what happens. Then start leaving just one device on at night until you ID the source.

Not a bad idea, powering it off at night.

I wonder if it's Cortana hearing a noise then speaking - it would explain the woman's voice.
I had it set on the lock screen & it would wake my laptop during the night whenever it heard any slight noise.

lol i thought i was going nuts i have the same first i thought it was the TV because it was on, and when i watch German TV sometimes you hear a chime, but it was not tuned into German programs, i gave up trying to find out why i heard chimes, i mean not the thing you go around telling people, so i am glad someone else wrote it first, at least that means i am not ready for the nut Farm, i have "had" windows sounds turned off i better check if they are still set to none, phew thx m8

Checked Windows sounds are still set to none, so if anyone finds out why my PC and others it seems sounds like a bell calling everyone to the table "dinner is ready" i would like to know

When the poster above me mention cortina or what ever its called i thought i would check if any software might be causing this i then noticed something what the heck happen to Edge its no longer installed on my PC?

Okay fixed i did a search for it but it did not pop, i then changed def browser to Edge and when i open a webpage it loaded but its not in my start menu?

Not fixed i tried pinning it after i got it open, but clicking icon does nothing, and the location where Windowsedge.exe was located is wrong, i do wish MS would stop breaking their own software.

At about 4:18AM again I heard it, ding ding ding, coming through my headphones. Woman's voice, "XXX detected". I turned off Windows sounds. Now I guess I'll unplug my headphones. Still, weird. There is nothing going on at that time according to the Event viewer. Maybe one of the anti-virus programs is trying to update? Dunno.

Ron, as you have not completed your system specs it is a little difficult to start diagnosis of your issue.

What is a little worrying is your statement "Maybe one of the anti-virus programs is trying to update?" it is not considered good practice to run more than one "live" antiVirus program at any one time.

I does sound that it could be a warning message from an AV but could be caused by one AV interfering with another, The "xxx" is probably generic due to the fact that it's a false message due to interference, ( xxx does not always mean what the twitterers at the back of the room think ).

If you check your AV's for setting for scan times, (they often pick 2:00am -4:00am), and the settings for "Voice" messages that are creeping more into software these days ...
