I tried extract and it says the compressed folder is invalid?
Okay that's a problem on your machine because I just downloaded it, extracted it and ran it.

You're going to have to skip this part for now.

On to the in-place repair install:

Select the W10 media tool and plug in an empty flash drive-save the W10 media to that, because you're not going to be able to mount an ISO on your machine.

View the contents of the newly-created W10 flash drive in file explorer - are you able to do that, or not?
Run setup.exe from there by double-clicking the file.

Ok - will try that tomorrow as it is getting late. One thought - could I try running the ISO file from a CD Rom/ DVD? I could try burning one tomorrow?

I updated my spec in my profile if that helps
Was this thing really "updated" from Vista>W7>W10? No clean installs ever?

I also still need to back up my files presumably before doing a repair?

Yes, that is an option as well, but you need to be able to open the ISO to get to the setup.exe inside it. I am thinking you will have the same problems.

Do you have another system you can hook this drive up to (slave) and run CHKDSK /R on it?

Yes, I bought win 7 myself as an upgrade and when I had a virus a couple of years after - I rebuilt it again I think from an image I made straight after upgrade as clean as I could get it as I had some software I had lost the key for and then of course we all moved to win 10 recently. But it has seemed pretty stable since

Okay. I have seen lots of "baggage" from upgrades - especially with W7>W10 - which are always resolved with a clean install. Just sayin'.
