I just searched Power Options via search/cortana as an alternative route (the way I got into settings to try the restore) and I found it but am getting the "this file does not have a program associated with it" error message. I could try running it from the directory directly if you know which one it sits in?
Yes, booting to Kyhi's rescue media is next step. The Fast Startup is not mandatory, but you'll want to do that eventually, when we get you running properly.
If you have a 64-bit machine, you'd download that one. If not sure, download the 32-bit one.
Don't worry about it for now - we'll get that done later; it's not so important.
Can you run Task Manager? You can get into Control Panel from there.
Select File>Run New Task and type control.exe.
Once Control Panel opens, select Power Options>Choose what the power buttons do>Change settings that are currently unavailable.
No - I can open the folder control panel that way as I could before the other way, but clicking on most of the icons brings up the file not associated error message
Its like file associations have been corrupted
The windows key is also not working
regarding your post #7, i too was afraid when i saw the list. all of my games basically will disappear just like that and it wasn't even in C: directory. i was hesitant to do it, but when i had no other choice, i just did it. yolo was what i had in mind. turns out nothing was gone. all my files are intact. it wouldnt broke your computer as it is only a refresh as you might say.
but i did the reset or refresh from the advanced startup. if you're still hesitant to do it, then copy all your necessary files somewhere else. better safe than sorry.
Thanks iDamn - if I end up doing that, I will bear that in mind. I really appreciate your sharing your experience.
Okay simrick, I downloaded the x64 version as I have a 64 bit machine and saved it to a 4GB memory stick. (Roxio media wanted to open it but I cancelled that )
The file is on the stick but I am doing something wrong as I cannot get it to boot from it. I have changed boot up orders before back in win 98 days but for some reason I am missing something this time.
So I removed all other connected devices
I interrupted boot up by pressing F2
I went into boot device config and selected USB generic compact
I selected this for first, second and third devices
I saved and exited - and it still booted up to my hard disk.
I tried using F12 and set that to the same and same issue.
Any idea what I am doing wrong?
