I will probably do the same with the free upgrade, but I was thinking the future for when I build a new PC. I doubt whether I would be able to transfer the W10 upgrade from this PC to a new one.
True.. but it might be nice to have a copy as a spare.

Yes indeed. Once I run the upgrade over W7, I want to create an ISO from the ESD folder so I can do a clean install. My W7 install is many years old now and I want to start out fresh.

    Good morning all:

I just found a fantastic deal on Windows 10 DVD ($89.99 Home and $129.99 Pro) that might be of interest to those who are planning to buy a retail copy of Windows 10. If you find a deal, post it here . . . we all need a good deal!

    Newegg.com - Windows 10 Preorder, $229.99 Intel Core i5-4690K Processor, $189.99 27 IPS Monitor w/ FREE SSD
Do make note that those specials are for the OEM version, not the Retail version.

So far, all Newegg has presented are OEMs. So, yeah, we know that.

That gave me pause for a moment. I thought that with Windows 8, MS basically made System Builder copies equivalent to retail copies for self-built systems. (It was OK for the original owner to transfer the license to a new system, just like for a Retail license. If a system with a System Builder license was sold to someone else, it was supposed to act like a traditional OEM license, not transferable to new hardware.)

A little online hunting makes me think that I was correct in that.

However, I didn't know that Win8.1 went back to the same license terms as Win7: System Builder licenses are for resale only. They're intended for small computer shops, who don't do enough business to justify the mass OEM licenses used by the major PC makers. Anyone buying an 8.1 System Builder license for personal use is in technical violation of the EULA.

I hope that the Win10 license situation is sorted out by the time I do my next PC system replacement. I have a disused Win8.1 license that I could use to qualify for the upgrade, but I may not want to use it before 7/29/2016.

Microsoft has changed all of their licensing. I've only used an OEM copy once in my building, I used it on a personal PC and the police didn't come out and arrest me. :) However, I had no idea that I was forbidden.

I qualify as an OEM in that I built the system and I never tried to move it to another computer, so . . .

    Hi there

    What does "Pre-Order" mean ???

Either you ORDER the product or just buy it from a store.

What's Pre-order -- getting confused here -- can't be any difference between ordering and "pre-ordering" -- maybe it's just me but anybody - please explain.

    Cheers

It means the product isn't released yet and you won't get it until it is.

Also, those prices aren't what I call a good deal!

Kinda like prepay, Jimbo. They get the money now, but you don't get the product until it's released. :)
