Start menu "greyed out" after Creators update

So, my start menu greyed out after Creators update, - https://i.gyazo.com/c17e75bb1a743d38...897d67e5d2.png

What can I do about it? Please help, need advice.

I tried reboot, switch start menu settings, end explorer.exe process and start it again - didn't help.

About trying to resize it by half? This bug among others is present in the start menu (SM) since build 15025 after a clean install. It was different from one clean install to the others, never the same. The app list switch was buggy, pin to start crashing, resizing it, no possibility of removing Edge, removing some or all titles would affect SM stability.

    Mine was OK after upgrading.

For the future reference, removing Cortana/SearchUI.exe causes it. SFC scan restores its files.
There are proper ways to remove Cortana, like wim tweak, using powershell commands and etc.

OH MY GODDDddd Windows what have you done to my computer now?

    sfc /scannow found no issues.

I installed Creator's update and "update with shut down" - next day when I boot, the menu's ****ed. Then I reboot (with update again!?) and it's still totally greyed out and unresponsive.

    Other observations:
    • it became normal again briefly, then returned to being greyed out. I literally can't click on anything. it's darker and clicking on anything gives no effect
    • I have Taskbar tweaker - could this be conflicting somehow?
    • Windows help + feedback doesn't work - just empty window.. curious! It's fully legit Win10
    • Edge browser launches and shows the logo and window frame for 1 second, then just closes!

    Whaaat is this! halp.

Hope my details are useful somewhere in uncovering this mystery.

Hi, new to these forums but I'll try and help.

I had the same problem after installing the 1703 ISO on a Toshiba Satellite C870. Greyed out start menu, couldn't change the desktop wallpaper, Edge shutting down a few seconds after opening, etc.

I managed to repair the issues by running Tweaking.com's Windows Repair v3.9.35 utility, with the default repair settings.

    Hope it helps!
