This is very annoying for me ever since upgrading to 10. These new XAML jumplists are horrible and like everything else Metrofied or new its minimalist with existing functionality not ported over. I wish they'd just let us enable the old GDI / DirectUI jumplists using a special registry key like the ones that lets us show the old calendar/clock and old volume control.
If you are an Insider and are on an insider build please upvote this feedback: Windows-Feedback:?contextid=215&feedbackid=5cd8e6f1-0be7-4429-8f1a-7b4c591bce5d&form=1&src=2
You can access that feedback in Insider builds from Run, or pasting it in Explorer address bar and pressing enter. It's the most upvoted feedback item related to allowing jumplist item customization.
If you are not on an insider build then that link will not work. If you're not an Insider, please instead go to the Desktop --> Taskbar section of the Windows Feedback "app" and upvote feedback items pertinent to this. Or add one if there isn't any existing.
Aside from the feedback on Aero Glass, Microsoft does seem to listen to highly upvoted feedback items. Though sometimes they misinterpret things and make things worse. So its important that there be a lot of upvotes on feedback like the one above to tell Microsoft we want this functionality returned.

Hi Guys. I think I found the magic value! Procmon is your friend!!! I let it run while a created a new textfile to be the most recent item on my Notepad jumplist. In Procmon, filtering for paths containing "JumpListItems" show the following:
RuntimeBroker.exe RegQueryValue HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\JumpListItems_Maximum NAME NOT FOUND
That certainly looked promising. And indeed, here is my jumplist without the value:
And here it is with JumpListItems_Maximum created as a DWORD & set to 0x20:
Have fun!!!

Keith, you did it!!! This works. And this does regulate the maximum sum of recent items + pinned items. I had to play with both JumpListItems_Maximum and Start_JumpListItems to get the jumplists just right. Note that I am on Insider Build 11082 where the jumplists look slightly different and the start menu 512 app bug has been fixed.
So what values gave you the layout you wanted??? I don't use jump lists much because the font size can't be adjusted -- low vision here. But others obviously want more control.
