The issue is he used it, it caused an error and since he has disconnected it the laptop still displays this flashing. He even went as far as relocating to office to prove it was not the environment in home.

At Caledon Ken's suggestion I reset the BIOS (or at least, I think I did - I'm relying very heavily on sites such as pcadvisor and techradar to guide me through a process that is light years ahead of my comprehension). The fun really started after I inserted my USB on which I had carefully created an install disk containing Windows 10 ISO: I encountered a message reading, 'windows cannot be installed on drive 0 partition 4'; a quick Google search brought me to this page https://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/...irmware%20mode, and following its advice I've deleted all the partitions. I suppose I'll have to re-create a couple of partitions down the line, but that seems to be fairly straightforward by comparison.
Anyway, Windows 10 has now completed its update process, and the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter which didn't flicker has been superseded by the Intel HD Graphics 4600...and the screen has begun to flicker and blink again. So I'm back to square one.
It's been an interesting process, but one which will ultimately lead me to the laptop repair shop to see if they can do anything to remedy it.

An interesting and exciting update!
I switched my laptop on about an hour ago and not once has it flickered or blinked! (I'm keeping a lot of fingers crossed here.) I'm attributing this to Caledon Ken's advice to reset the BOIS; something I hadn't considered, but it seems to have worked - thank you Caledon Ken.
One thing I have noticed is that when I switch my laptop on now I see two options on screen - f2 to Boot and f7 for Setup - something I haven't seen before, but then after a few seconds I see the welcome sight of the angled blue squares that make up the Windows 10 icon. Should I be worried? How do I revert it to normal (ie straight to the Windows 10 icon)?Last edited by barndoor; 22 Mar 2017 at 16:55.

If it doesn't hang waiting I would ignore. Otherwise, and I can't remember, did you disable fast startup in windows or disable hibernation as we went through fix process. If you did then you could turn back on. If you didn't then you've changed a BIOS setting.
See if you have one called FastBoot. There may also be another option to show this menu or not. Hence my previous comments, write down existing so you can reset. On my existing Asus I can take screen prints, handy when you are only in there every couple of years.
Really happy to hear its working and as a bonus you get a chance to explore your BIOS in detail.

I ran into a similar problem on my son's Dell XPS27 two nights ago, right after WUMT offered an Intel HD4600 driver update to me, and I installed it. All I had to do was use the "Roll Back Driver" button in Device Manager for that device (I show a screencap from my production desktop here, which has a GeForce 750 Ti instead):
When the driver is the cause, and you haven't cleaned out the predecessor driver, you can use this approach both expeditiously and effectively.

The home electric and other items would not affect the inverter for the LCD screen, since the battery acts like a UPS to help keep power spikes and the such from causing issues. The inverters for the screens have been known to fail, especially on off brand units that are not built to higher standards as known brand units.
