    Bootloader

    Hello
I tried to create a USB external SSD portable Ubuntu. I followed the online instructions so as not to affect my bootloader.

Guess what, it affected my bootloader . Without doing a clean install is there a way to restore the bootloader which is relatively straightforward?

It currently only boots if the ubuntu SSD is plugged in and shows the duel boot.

Its a Surface Pro Gen 1,(very old) and its seems to have a bios and UEFI, and an EFI partition

    Windows repair didn't help.

    Thanks for any help

It will be helpful if you give us the link to instructions you have followed.

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please type below commands into Command Prompt and press Enter key.

Following commands will repair Master Boot Record (MBR), Boot Sector and BCD Store.

    Code:
    Bootrec /FixMbr

    Bootrec /FixBoot

    Bootrec /scanos

    Bootrec /RebuildBcd

What is the priority boot drive on BIOS?

If I understood you can boot into win 10 with the USB connected.
I want to know if your drive is Legacy-MBR or UEFI-GPT so I can give you correct instructions.
Boot Win10 and take a snapshot of Disk Manager (C:\Windows\System32\diskmgmt.msc)
    Place here as attachment.
