Computer takes forever to fully shut down.

My computer has been taking around ~5-10+ minutes to fully shut down. It starts to shut down normally when I press shut down in the start menu,shutting down screen, screen turns off and everything... but, everything is still on (lights, fans, hdd). I've had this problem for about a month and a half now and decided to get a new ssd to install windows on, I was excited for this problem to go away but frustratingly its still here even after that. Maybe its something with the BIOS? When I shut down, and after waiting ~5-10 mins to turn it back on, it seems to start up slower than usual almost like it crashed or something. Also when I put it to sleep the screen turns off but it seems that's about it, fans, lights, everything is still up and running and eventually turns off or crashes(?). Any help?

EDIT: Solved! I was messing around in my BIOS and did an Internet Flash to update it and its fixed! weird...

Im not an expert on this issue, but I know that sometimes certain hardware can conflit with the shut down or sleep process since shutdown in Windows 10 is a sort of hybrid sleep if I am not mistaken. I know some hardware doesnt take too well to that. I would do a search for your specific computer model and shutdown and sleep issues. You might find something that way.

Its a custom computer that I built so I can't lookup the specific computer model, but this only started happening a month and a half ago and I've own this PC with windows 10 for 1 1/2 years now

Have you turned off Fast Startup in Windows?
Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 10

You also will want to get rid of hibernation when using an SSD. In an admin command prompt:

I've tried turning off fast startup but unfortunately it doesn't work for me. I turned off hibernation. As of now, when i turn my pc off I get the shutting down screen and then the screen goes off, machine stays on and after ~10+ mins it just turns itself back on... I have to force shut it down now.

Hey, so If you know how to get into your BIOS look for an option to update or RESET / RESTORE BIOS SETTINGS. I think my problem was an option called quick boot that was messing with things. So after resetting the BIOS it turned that option off. Hope it works for you

I'm getting similar but not sure whether these fixes are right for my laptop (Windows 10, all updates added).
If I tell it to sleep screen goes off but lights flash for about 10 minutes plus and then it sleeps. Same with hibernate. It was just fine up to about month or six weeks ago. Very frustrating as I can't do any work unless I hold the power button down which then causes eMClient to have to check or repair the email database.

MY BIOS is due an update but I'm 'terrified' that it gets fouled up if I try to do the update. Obviously I rely on this laptop as all my personal data and records are on it and yes, I do have a Macrium Reflect back up but even so...

Any suggestions please? I know it shouldn't make any difference but I'm pleading for a simple way of resolving this because at 83 I'm losing any common sense I have left!

I hear you bertie11. I have up updated 4 BIOS's this past year successfully but I ensured the recommendation to do so came directly from the manufacturer: not by-word-of-mouth or some website indicated to do so.

I also use Macrium Reflect (Free in my case).
--- I have USB rescue media.

But if you want to update the BIOS yourself, add a Boot Menu option for system image recovery before updating the BIOS.
Adding a Boot Menu option for system Image recovery - KnowledgeBase v7 - Macrium Reflect Knowledgebase - KnowledgeBase v7 - Macrium Reflect Knowledgebase
--- After updating the BIOS, you can remove the Boot Menu option for system image recovery if you wish.
--- You can keep it though if you wish but in my experience it continues to boot every time you start the computer.

Unfortunately however I'm not sure if a system image recovery will work if updating the BIOS causes a crash anyway.
--- Someone else will have to chime in on that.

So that leaves a final decision: have a qualified computer person update it for you.
--- I know it will cost a few $$$'s but I believe it will be worth it if you have doubts about a successful BIOS update.

You don't want to spend the rest of the time using that computer in the manner you have to do now and very importantly as an added negative: you don't want to continue tp "hold down the power button".
