used Spro1 - usb drives only work when in a usb hub?

i received the surface pro 1 today, but there is a strange problem with it.

USB drives are not recognised when directly connected to spro1 like they should be. They are not visible in file explorer, device manager or disk management. only when put through a non-powered USB hub do they show up as expected.

The usb drives continue to work on other computers, and this behavior continued after the spro1 was factory reset to windows 8.

    does anyone have any solutions?

Don't know if this situation fits but I got a Dell Venue 8 [8"] table over a year ago and the USB ports require an OTG/On The Go cable to adapt to USB devices, at least with my Thumb drives and my WDC Passport HDD. I got the OTG cable from Dell but there's other sources.

It's just a bit weird. I know from previous eperience the usb drives are supposed to work normally, on other Surface Pro 1 devices. And they work on this one fine, so long as they're plugged into the hub. But connecting my PS4 controller on a microUSB cable won't work, no matter if it's directly connected to the machine or the hub.

Sorry. Read too quick and didn't realize your hub is not powered. I was suggesting Spro1 wasn't putting out enough "juice". Please ignore.
