Taskbar now has a scroll arrow, why?

I moved my taskbar to the left side a couple months ago, today it added a scroll arrow to it and displays 3 icons in the "other column. If I expand the taskbar it does not place the 2nd column in the expansion. There is plenty of room in a single column for all the icons and the hidden task can no longer be accessed.
I want my previous arrangement back. If I did something to precipitate this I am clueless.

FYI, I rebooted and it came back. I just love the way W10 takes these side trips. Keeps my blood pressure up.

    Hello ruggb, :)

This sounds like when you have Always show all icons in the notification area turned off to have some of them in the expansion arrow menu instead. If this is the case, you can turn this setting on to see all notification area icons without the arrow.

thanks - but if this statement is correct:

If you choose to hide icons and notifications, you won't be notified about changes or updates for that app. To view hidden icons at any time, click the arrow next to the notification are on your taskbar.

W10 was just choosing to have a fit at my expense, because I could not view any hidden icon.

That would be for notices from the icon itself.

Do you have your settings set to always show all icons?

I think I do, Mine just shows each choice - I don't see one that is universal. But I never changed that either when it started or when I rebooted. So W10 just got lost.

Do you see the same setting like in step 4 of Option 2 below?

OK, we got off track here. The issue was that when W10 went on vacation the TASKBAR icons would not all appear on the TASKBAR. It required a scroll to another "page" to see some. Also, the hidden icons in the SYSTEM TRAY would not appear at all when the arrow was clicked. It was not due to something I changed, as it reset itself upon a reboot. Unlike when an 'upgrade" puts Edge back in charge of PDF files, it did not require that I change something to fix it.

Ah, ok. I thought you were talking about the arrow you see in the taskbar notification area when you have Always show all icons in the notification area turned off.

In January-2022 I am still struggling with this issue. Microsoft support suggested I add it as a "Suggestion". There are three Threads here regarding the same issue but none show that their problem was resolved. Any progress with yours @ruggb?
