Well, I apologize for sounding rude. But, no it doesn't have to be new. Just as long as it has Windows 10 and is in decent shape with a number keypad and a 15.6" or larger screen.

If it needs the RAM upgraded, I will be glad to do so as I did it with my Toshiba.
I didn't think you were rude.

I have a 2 year old HP Pavilion with an i7 and 6 gigs of RAM that I upgraded to Windows 10 (from 8.1) last year.(the model itself is closer to 3 years old) It's worked flawlessly since I've owned it and you could probably find a similar used model for what you're looking to spend. I bought it after I returned the Dell that I initially bought that gave me nothing but problems for 10 days. I've used HP solely for work for the last 15 years--everything from towers to Elitebooks and they've all performed well with little or no issues.

What model is your Pavilion? I will look it up and see what I can find. That's what I am interested in anyway, is a Pavilion laptop. The reason why I said I didn't want another Acer is because Acer does not stand behind their product. I have an Acer desktop. The first version of Windows 10 was supported, but when the Anniversary Update rolled out, they didn't support it because the drivers still date back to 2015. That's the latest the drivers were updated.

Although, the Acer has proved to be reliable with no problems even with the Anniversary Update installed. I still don't like the fact that Acer didn't support the product for the Anniversary Update.

I've had good luck with HP laptops in the past as well (just not their printers). I would not get another Toshiba. They just don't seem to perform as well as the HP and Asus laptops I've had. For printers its Epson all the way, in my house.

My Toshiba has been great. I don't like AMD processors either. I like Intel. I had an Acer laptop not long ago with an AMD processor, and it just didn't perform as well as my Toshiba with the Intel processor has done.

HP Pavilion p214dx is the exact model with the specs I have. I paid about $550 for it new 2 years ago. I saw similar models when I purchased that one. Some with an i5 processor and 8 gigs of RAM and they were all in the same price range.

Note that mine did come with 8.1 but upgraded flawlessly to 10 and have had no issue with subsequent updates.

I'm looking to replace my wife's Toshiba C55T-B5110 (Intel N3530 processor) for her birthday due to battery charging issues. It's been a horribly slow laptop ever since purchased new. But, of course, some models will perform better than others from the same manufacturer.

My computer will stay charged for the whole day. We do have an HP Stream notebook or netbook PC that we are trying to sell since no one really uses as it is very small. It came with Windows 10. Anyhow, the screen on it flickers at times when it's been used for long periods of time. They say that HP will soon send out a fix for it to fix the flickering. I wonder how much we could sell it for? It's in excellent shape.
