Am I right? Disabling 8.3 file names would mess up all of your programs?

    IMO: Don't disable 8.3 filenames

My conclusion from asking Crucial - It should be perfectly safe to disable 8.3 filenames, but:

1.) There are no noticeable performance improvements

2.) It would break some of your back-wards compatibility - a kind of back-wards compatibility which you'll probably never need, but, you never know

You'll find articles arguing in both directions because there's no consensus.

So, IMO . . . do not disable it . . . do not make your system, potentially, more complicated to function properly (with fixes)
