Start menu Apps list is not updating when changes are made to folder

Hi folks, pulling my hair out on this one. I'm trying to clean up and create folders for the new 'all apps' alphabetical list through the StartMenu\Programs folder.

I can confirm that dragging a shortcut OUT of the folder does update and the app is removed from the list. However, dragging that same shortcut back into the folder does not refresh on the apps list.

Likewise, adding a new folder or program to the startmenu folders does not refresh the app list.

Any idea what's happening here? Does any one know what service runs in the background to monitor this and update these lists so I can troubleshoot the service?

Hi, I take the simple view.. and for me the necessary one.. I use Classic Shell (free) 'cos
    a. I don't want to be subject to the vagaries of a badly specified start menu
    b. I don't want to struggle with it, just use it
    c. I have a large categorised start menu with subfolders (most programs create a folder of shortcuts) and just look what MS's attempt does with that:

    - all those help files are actually in separate folders.. Classic Shell shows these correctly and no issue with drag 'n drop- it just works.

And did I mention it's highly configurable - and that goes for its search feature too...

(Someone may address your actual question... sorry!)

Thanks, I actually just got my Windows 10 laptop yesterday, and the very first thing I always do is disable bloated services. I'm assuming I did something, but none of the services I disabled appear related to indexing, start menu, etc.

I found the Classic Shell soon after, and I'm remiss to throw in the towel so soon when the new UI does look nice and flat and slick. I may just end up rolling back the clock if this proves problematic.

So I installed classic shell, and I have the same issue. Changes made to the programs menu by modifying the StartMenu\Programs folder do not refresh on the programs list, even with Classic Shell. I believe there must be a service that is not enabled.
