Help with copying files to CD

I cannot figure out how to burn some files to a CD. I put a blank in the drive and try to copy files to the CD by opening a window of the source and the drive as the target. I click and drag the files from the source to the target window and I get the following response. It starts to prepare the disk but never completes.

What type of disc are you using? CD-R? DVD-+R or a DVD or CD-RW disc? RW discs can be reused, but they must be formatted after each use. Also, they cannot be read until you Finalize the disc. We don't suggest using these. If you are using an -+R disc, and the burn fails, you cannot use that disc again, throw it away.
In the window Files Ready To Be Written to Disc, there should be a button on the toolbar that says, Burn To Disc.
The Windows built in Burner can get confusing, I prefer using a 3rd party program called CD BurnerXP. Open the program, choose Data Disc, drag your files you want to burn to the bottom panel, put a blank in and click the Burn icon in the middle toolbar.

Instead of burning to disc, you can backup your files to a USB Flash Drive. You then can easily add files to it, or can be erased and reused several times

I'm using CD-R, but I tried the steps you recommended before and it still didn't work. Ended up with CD BurnerXP. Thanks.
