Please post results of two powercfg commands.

If you have latest driver and you think it was an update, roll driver back.

Again I will mention a system restore will take you back to a known working environment. Yes new programs will have to be installed, there simply can't be many. Please back up data.

My root hub may be old USB. The most speed I've ever gotten out of it has been around 750k. I have a USB 2 4 port hub plugged into it, but...

This is interesting. I turned off the sleep function - set it to never. Then when it updated last night ( it said it was about to, anyway - I set it to 4 AM ), it didn't become unresponsive like the other times. It came right on this morning, when I moved the mouse. I had to restart a couple of programs, as usual when it does update, but it didn't do the unresponsive black screen thing.

So if I can figure out now, what's keeping it from sleeping, I can solve this. When I have some time later, I'm gonna unplug all the USB stuff and force sleep. That should tell me if it's internal USB or peripheral.

Well I unplugged everything USB and it still wouldn't sleep. But I suppose if the drivers are doing it, and there are no later drivers than what I have ( the internal USB drivers latest was 2006 by Microsoft ), and they arent making anymore, then we're hosed here.

Just found this: Problem with ICH10 Family USB Universal Host Controller Drivers - Microsoft Community

Being it was sleeping ok up until that update a few weeks ago, I have to think they did something that stopped it, though.

Personally I'm always leery of third parties providing drivers. That said I'm sure there are very good vendors out there.

First I would run this utility by Intel and see what it reports.

Download Intel(R) Chipset Device Software (INF Update Utility)

There is no harm in trying driver but ensure you have a restore point you can fall back to and you may even want to take an Image. Yes I'm paranoid, I like to have many escape routes. When you download driver you should also run AV scan on file.

I just tried it and it failed to install - unknown error.

Then there is a compatibility issue.

Could you run Intel's tool and see if there is an update listed by it.
