What have you got to lose by giving it a go? Image your current setup to give you a fallback then go for it.

Thank you on the answer. If I understood you good, I can upgrade my win 7 which I got when I was a student (I am not a student now) to win 10 legally. Are you 100% sure? Thanks for response.
What NavyLCDR said above is also my opinion.

If you weren't legal, Windows 7 would have already stopped working. :)

I've got about 400-500 MB of recommended updates for my HP laptop running on Windows 8.1, from about January of this year. I avoided installing them because I had a problem with one of the updates where it stalled and I had to hard reboot the computer, and also because I haven't been using the laptop much so I just put if off. So I would prefer to avoid updating Windows 8.1 and just go ahead and upgrade to Windows 10. Also to save time and disk space.

So, does it matter if I skip updating Windows 8.1?

(I don't think any are driver updates, but hard to say for sure because a lot of them don't give a description of what the update actually does. The laptop runs fine, no issues.)

You don't need the updates to upgrade from here:

"Can I re-install Windows 10 from scatch (clean install) without first installing the older version? Can I do this after the 1 year period?"

    "scatch"

    Did you mean scratch? :)

Just a reminder for those only upgrading today:

Remember that if you start upgrade an hour or so before the deadline, you might not get Windows 10 activated. It must be fully installed and be online to get the digital activation which must be OK before the deadline.

Starting the upgrade process just before the deadline might leave you with an unactivated Windows 10.
