Windows Defender ain't exactly Beta and it happened once again, quarantining Word (Winword.exe) - I'd better explain it was from a copy of Office 97 I run either over my network or from a shared drive depending which device I'm working on - it may not be new, but it's fast and compact like the .docs it produces - and the documents are identical when printed, or converted to .docx or .odt (or saved as WordPerfect 5.0 or 5.1, DOS or Windows, for that matter) - so it isn't installed in Windows 10 on my laptop.

Perhaps that is why it is recognised as malicious by WD - it's old and tiny at 5.2MB, and pretends it's a Windows Word program - perhaps it's a virus in disguise. Shame on you WD not recognising one of your own relatives!

On my home PC I am using win 7 which I got free when I was a university student. I have graduated and I am not longer a student. I am not sure but I think that Win 7 I got soon after it was officially released. Can I legally make a free win 10 upgrade?

I don't see why not. If you are not going to make a complete image backup of your Windows 7 before you upgrade, I would suggest that you at least retrieve the product key for it using Showkey Plus and record it somewhere.

I have a product key. I have read that enterprise and some other users can't make a free upgrade. That is the main reason why I am in doubt.

Right. Enterprise is specifically for business. So is "volume licensing" (a corporation that gets a license for, let's say, 100 computers will have a "volume license".

However, in your case, you don't have to worry. You are considered a "consumer", not a business user.

I'm sure you have done so, but if you haven't, you'll need to install all the service packs that have come down the pike for Windows 7 before you start the upgrade process. Some have reported that Windows 10 won't install unless the underlying OS is completely up to date.

Agreed. But there is only 1 SP for Win7. I just completed a reinstall of Win7 followed by SP1 but the kicker is there were well over 100 updates that needed to be done after the SP install. I've not Upgraded Win7 to Win10 after installing just SP1 so can't speak to whether it will fully work. I just updated one of our church's Win8.1 to get it ready for Win10 and after 4 months of no updates there were 158 to do. Downside was the first try failed so I started doing them a couple of dozen at a time, finally got to the cause of the failure which was an update for Access 2002 that had never been on the computer so I hid that one and everything completed, just waiting for the Win10 notice of availability. Long-winded way of saying it works best to have the computer working properly, an Upgrade won't necessarily fix existing problems.

Ah, I should have said "and all updates" to go with the service packs. Normally a service pack includes all the prior updates; however, in this case, there were updates after SP1 with no following SP. That's why I finally told my clients I'd no longer reinstall Windows 7 on a computer; it just was not cost effective.

As to Access 2002, I've encountered the "this program requires the database from Access" (paraphrased), so there may be some older program that's either been uninstalled or is no longer in use that required the Access database. When those programs are uninstalled, the Access database isn't always also uninstalled.

And yeah, I can see why a 14-year-old database update wouldn't be compatible with Windows 10.

There are NO updates to Windows 7 required to upgrade to Windows 10 using install media created from the ISO file. I've done two upgrades on two separate computers with nothing but the original Windows 7 Home Premium installed directly from a pre-SP1 DVD with no updates to Windows 7 at all.

Windows 7 SP1 and other updates are only required to get the Get Windows 10 app from Windows Update to appear.

You can also upgrade from Windows 8.0, Windows 8.1 is only required to get the Get Windows 10 app from Windows Update to appear.

Thank you on the answer. If I understood you good, I can upgrade my win 7 which I got when I was a student (I am not a student now) to win 10 legally. Are you 100% sure? Thanks for response.

As long as you have Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate, that would be correct. Only a No if you have Enterprise version.
