You're right Jeff it is free. I upgraded my clean install of 8 Pro in a VM to 8.1 last week, I certainly wouldn't have paid for it.

An easier way is to get the free bootable ISO software for Windows 8.1 which can be activated with either a W8 or W8.1 product key. And do a clean install with it.

This is the link to how to get the ISO software on W8 Forums:

    well guys,

then why does he get the message to install 8 and 8.1 and to buy Win10 when available????

I will reask him if he is sure.

    keep you posted.

    Jeff
That still doesn't make sense. You don't need to buy 8 or 8.1 to get Win10 free. You can get it with any version of 7 as well..

When you click on the W10 upgrade icon it gives you a message to upgrade for £99.00 FREE.

Perhaps that's what he's seeing? Just a guess.

Ok forum members, the poster meant "by" not "buy". He is from Belgium and The Kingdom of Belgium has three official languages: Dutch, French, and German. In German one say's "bei or "beim"(by or by the) which should be translated as "through" or "through the". On the side it can also mean "at or "at the".

That said he meant "Now I got the answer, that he was wrong, but had to install Win 8, through Win 8.1 to get Win 10 free."

Can someone please explain exactly how Insider members receive their free copy of W10?

Obviously not via the KB3035583 update GWX icon on the taskbar, because it's not there in W10.

So if Insiders use GWX on their W7, 8 or 8.1 installations, they are no different to a non-Insider who uses this icon.

Or does each Insider member get an email telling them their copy of W10 is available to be downloaded as an ISO, and then used over a W7, 8, 8.1 installation?

Strangely enough I've got W8.1, and W8 upgraded to 8.1, loaded on different PCs and neither show the GWX icon in the taskbar, despite the KB3035583 update downloaded and installed.

But ironically I have got it on W7 Ult Retail version, which I don't want to use, because I plan to keep W7 active.

So I have no easy way to get W10 upgrade. Any suggestions?

    thanks Cliff,

but he said to me that he had to buy Win 8.1, but i do not know this myself. He is a Apple fan, uses Windows nos and then, but he knows his stuff.

Anyway, as said i want to see this with my own eyes.

    Cannot understand this either.

Jeffrys ( to avoid too much Jeff's on the board). hahaha

The GWX app does not upgrade you. All it does is enable the automatic downloading of the final version, which is done by Windows Update. The actual upgrade occurs when you install Windows 10 as an upgrade. That very thing happens when an insider does the same.

As I explained in the first message in this thread, Insiders do not get a free copy. They get the same free upgrade everyone else is eligible for, which is accomplished by upgrading a legitimate license of 7 or 8.x.
