    ok guys,

i am back on the subject.

Some pointed a finger to me because i asked a question about Win 10 being free for all Win 7, 8, 8.1 users....

And i might be wrong again, but my best friend who did get the info about free upgrade via mail by me, said this to me this morning:

When trying to install Windows 10 over Win 7, that, since he has Windows 7 PREMIUM, he has to install Win 8 and 8.1 and BUY Windows 10.

So where am i wrong here?
my friend has a genuine license and the computer says no free upgrade possible?

thanks for any help to get this right.

    Jeff
From what I've read here and other places you can go from Win7 home premium to Win10 and get the home/core version of Win10. No one will have to purchase a copy of Win10.. it's a totally free upgrade for WIn10

Your friend is wrong. All x86/64 consumer versions of Windows 7 and Windows 8.x (ie not enterprise, or other exotics versions) are eligible for the free upgrade. Only Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 S14 can automatically upgrade via Windows Update. All other eligible versions must upgrade via an ISO (not a clean install via ISO, upgrade install).

This has been repeated many many times, including in the first post of this thread with a nice chart.

Sounds like your friend may have got scammed. There are some companies that may take pre-orders but it won't be delivered tell on or after July 29th 2015. There is no need to buy windows 10 if you have Windows 7 or 8.1 installed unless you are an enterprise user.

Make sure he got windows 10 iso from the correct place and not use any leaked version. Maybe someone here can post the website link for Belgium iso download.

If your friend did get scam, please report have him report it here . Maybe someone here can post the Belgium link for reporting this. Make sure he cancel his credit/debit card if he used that to purchase the copy unless he was pre-ordering a disk from a reliable company.

no Charlie, not for sale right now, but why does my friend get the message that he can only buy Win 10 (when available on july 29th) and not the option to install it for free?

He comes to my place in 2-3 weeks and will bring his laptop with him, so i can see for myself then.

But the answer from MS had to be, "You can upgrade for free starting july 29th, right?

Mystere, perhaps you could encode your first post in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics to make it more clear.

He possibly needs to do a clean install of windows 7 (Backup any documents he wants to keep). Then do the upgrade to windows 10. It sounds like his windows 7 install maybe messed up.

I know of no such message being delivered by Microsoft. Even non-genuine windows won't display such a message.

It could be malware, trying to get him to pay them money.

Jeff, is it possible that your friend hasn't updated his installation of Windows 7 to Service Pack 1. That's all I can think of for now.

    hi,

since my friend lives not next door, i phoned him to check the information he gave me.

Now i get the answer, that he was wrong, but had to install Win 8, BUY Win 8.1 to get Win 10 free.

He will come to me (as said) in 2-3 weeks and then i check this out myself.

He was not lying, just made a mistake.

So i leave it like that, but will post the truth here in 2-3 weeks.
