Why? Why is one person entitled to receiver a higher grade of a product that they are getting FOR FREE than another person? If Toyota said, "We will give you a free Toyota base-level Camry for the trade in of any vehicle you can drive onto our lot" - would that entitle a person who drives a 2015 BMW onto the lot something better than a FREE Toyota Camry over the person who drives in a 1965 Pinto?

That is a problem because than it would become same as OEM license. In that case I would be better of staying with 8.1 instead. To be frank (not my name), there's nothing wrong with 8.1 either. I just don't want to end up loosing both after that cut off date and would like to know where I stand now, not to be surprised next July.
I wouldn't even mind buying Retail W10 at some time but must be assured that MS would one day change that too.
It's not a problem because you are gaining an OEM Windows 10 license for free. In August of 2016 you want to transfer your retail Windows 8.1 license to another computer, then go right ahead. The exact same requirements apply as always did. Remove Windows from the old computer first. Microsoft isn't taking anything away from you by giving you a free, although limited, license to upgrade certain computers, and certain computers only to Windows 10.
Yes but my issue is with MS not explicitly stating that and are creating great confusion judging by all those questions all over the net. With MS apparently so determined to push W10, they are not helping themselves very good with all that ambiguity when just one sentence can clear all that. A day doesn't pass without somebody asking me about those things and I don't have clear answer to show them where it states to be so and so !.
As I said before, W7 was upgraded to W8 almost free and Retail version stayed Retail, didn't get tied to particular MB. Don't remember exactly now but that upgrade was something like $24 or Euro, something like that. MS elected to give it free for limited time, that's OK, they have an agenda to popularize W10 and will make that loss up some way, that's their business but let them state clearly for all world to know what exact policy is.
And I hate Windows 10 being pushed on me. I have heard of problems with 10, my brother's computer takes simply forever to start up and another friend reports she crashed it twice and rebuilt it twice and avoids the edge as much as possible. She says it has a lot of bugs.
My computer that I have had for about a year starts up immediately on 8.1. I don't want Windows 10. My main concern since I have automatic updates (highly recommended), will Windows 10 be automatically installed?.

I have Windows 8 and Windows 7 retail licenses. I accept that Microsoft is effectively giving me a free Windows 10 OEM license on my current hardware. But what if I don't want it? Microsoft is making it very difficult for people to keep using their existing Windows 7/8 retail licenses by bombarding them with requests that they upgrade to Windows 10. On my Windows 7 system this was making the system almost unusable until I installed a third party solution to stop the messages (Microsoft provided no way to stop them).
I have upgraded one of my retail licenses to Windows 10, but I resent the fact that when I change my hardware I will have to pay for a new Windows 10 retail license. It's unrealistic to say I can always go back to Windows 8 or 7 at that stage. In my view Microsoft are trying to force users to ditch their Windows 7 or Windows 8 retail licenses by virtually insisting that they convert to a Windows 10 OEM license.
Yes, that's one of the worst things Microsoft can do if they want to convince folks to upgrade. At some point, people will just revolt.
If I remember correctly, if you have a retail license to Windows 7 or 8.1, your upgrade will be a retail license. If you have an OEM license, changing certain hardware has always invalidated your OEM license.

For those of us who build our own systems, yes, we'll have to buy our copy of Windows 10. That is, unless we have an old copy of Windows 7 or 8.1 laying around and use it to upgrade to Windows 10 before July 29, 2016. :)
For those who buy OEM systems, if your computer craters and you have to buy a new OEM system, the probability is virtually 100% that it will come with Windows 10 installed.
Nope, but I still have several copies of Windows 7 and 8.1 Retail (no, I can't sell or give them away). I'm pretty sure I won't be the only one who has a few of these. Mine are beta testing rewards, giveaways from attending MVP and Butterfly meetings in Redmond, and a couple each from my old Technet subscription.
