Dec 2016 Win10 updates cause lag and missing, empty context menus

Thanks again Ken, this has been a great response from the tenforum and I am much obliged to you and Bro67. I'm 70 years old and within my circle of friends I have no one with whom I can confer on PC matters. All the options I have are mine or Googled so it's great to have some erudite suggestions. I've saved another image with the auto updates turned off and just the new Asus graphics driver loaded so will try that for a day. I'll check the Bios meantime as you suggest and post the results.

Thanks to Caledon Ken and Bro67. Seemed not to have been the Bios, I loaded defaults and no change. In the end I figured Bro67 had a point, the installation I considered stable was in fact a clean Win7 updated to 10 and probably > four years old. I bit the bullet and reinstalled 10 and prevented windows updating drivers and....all seem fine. The worst part in the end was reinstalling Outlook which despite having a backup took hours [how does anyone end up with 41 000 emails?]. Thanks again for the input guys.

A thought on your 41000 emails. Depending on how you have your mail set up in Outlook it likely downloaded all the contents from your true mail account. Not all that long ago it was popular to POP mail accounts with either gmail or hotmail or where ever. Now the default is IMAP. You access your true email account through your client, Outlook for the PC. Now depending on how you had Outlook and your mail account set up here is how you get 41000 emails.

In outlook you can say for a "POP" account download my mail and leave on server. There are other options like download my mail and keep on server 10 days. Obviously if you had download and never delete nothing would be deleted. Then on your true email account, some like the older Hotmail had a setting that said "Do not allow clients to make changes". So even if you had Outlook for the PC set to delete the mail the mail system says I don't take instructions from anyone. Both result in nothing being deleted.

Then when you recreate you Outlook profile the mail system says this Outlook for PC hasn't seen any of this and kicks off a massive download.

Two things to check. If you are still using a POP account, I recommend IMAP, make sure you tell it to delete after the appropriate number of days. Then sign in to your mail account through a browser and ensure the POP settings on your mail account allow clients to delete mail.

As AddRAM asked, is there a reason for Outlook on PC. The benefits of going all web are they, the supplier, look after backups and all your mail is accessible everywhere. Gmail and Outlook (Hotmail) and most other suppliers have made really solid product offerings. I'm really enjoying the new Outlook on the web for some of its mail handling features, especially around newsletters / flyers (I will never understand why MS rebranded Hotmail Outlook when they already had Outlook for the PC other than to make people's mind really messed up.)
