How can I get my folders back after Desktop updating?

Hi everybody! I use Windows 10 and yesterday my system automatically updated my old desktop to a new one and now I have this so called "Start Menu 8 v 4" (at least that's how it's called, i don't know). I lost all the folders I used to have on my desktop. I found them somehow on my C drive and I put 4 of them back onto my "new" desktop again. As I turned on my laptop this morning I noticed that the update had been removed. I have the the "old" desktop again, however, without the folders I put there yesterday. Any ideas why that happened and how I could get my folders back? I really need them, because of the files they contained. Do you have any suggestions on what I could do?

Thank you very much in advance!

    Welcome to the Ten forums.

When I look up that product it looks like an add-on to windows or lets just call it a program. Just asking, were you downloading another program and this one may have slipped in?

Alternately could also ask were you a Windows 8.x user and you installed a product to give you "Windows 7" like start menu or Classic menu?

Not sure when you did your last restore point, you should check in any event that restore points are enabled, however you may wish to restore back to a time before this change if you have such a restore point.

We should first establish whether you had "Start" menu software installed from a third party and then we can reference its restore process. I trust your folders weren't actually deleted and you had shortcuts on your desktop. If these were not short cuts but actual folders we must hope they were not deleted. Have you checked your Recycle Bin?

I always recommend to people to have shortcuts on your desktop even if it a shortcut to a folder.

Any file that you saved to the Desktop, would be in your User files (ie) C:\Users\[YourUserName]\Desktop.
If you installed IOBit Start Menu 8V4, it still should connect to your desktop folder, but may have created a new desktop folder. See if you have that listed as a program. Then start the program to access that desktop.
