Microsoft wants tester to upgrade from previous build not do clean install. A lot of fast rings release builds didn't get an iso so you have to upgrade. (Yes, you can make one but that not my point)

In fact consumer will be required to upgraded from windows 7 or 8.1 and can do a clean install afterwords.

I wouldn't be testing windows 10 if I had to re-install everything. I do have an image backup though.
Microsoft wants people to do everything, not one specific thing. Regardless, that was not my point. My point is that if you're running beta software, you have to be cool with any situation that may arise, including losing all your data, destroying your hardware, even blowing up your house due to a software caused hardware fault that feedsback through your electrical boxes.

If you're not prepared to accept anything, then you shouldn't be using beta software.

I don't think no one would use beta software if it really risked blowing up your house but I know you were just using that as extreme example. My point now is there should be less risk then there was in the past because it getting close to the rtm or general release.

In my opinion, I think people shouldn't upgrade from a preview to rtm or general release version. I think Microsoft should provide an iso home rtm image or iso pro rtm image so the insiders could do a clean install or an upgrade.

We already know for a fact Microsoft is going to do that, so why complain like they're not?

Yes, I was being extreme to make a point. As beta testers, you should not expect, or even feel you have a right to any particular outcome. An upgrade may or may not work. If it does, great, but if it doesn't... it's beta software. Even at this stage... bugs can still be there (and are). simple bugs can cause big problems. Even one mistyped character could destroy your disk. So no, there's no "less risk" situation with any beta software, even software this late in the game.

People still don't understand that software development has fundamentally changed in recent years, it's not the old way where you write all the software, then test it all, then fix whatever bugs are left, then test it again and ship it. That's called Waterfall development, and most major companies don't do that anymore.

Most companies are now using Agile development, which is a very different method of software development, management, and testing. With Agile, you might see new features going in the week before it's supposed to ship, because those features were relegated to that sprint. When you do a testing cycle, you only test what you just added, and there is heavy reliance on Unit testing to insure software doesn't break when new features get added.

You really cannot say "At this stage it should be more solid" because that's just not how Agile works.

At one point doesn't software have to be solid before it is released to the normal consumer?
